1. Introduction
The Infracon Sensor 628A is a passive infrared (PIR) occupancy sensor designed for automatic control of fluorescent and incandescent lighting. This sensor detects motion within its coverage area to switch lights ON and OFF, providing energy savings and convenience. It requires connection to an Infracon Control 629A unit for power and relay control.
2. Safety Information
Please read and understand all instructions before installing or operating this device. Failure to follow these instructions may result in electrical shock, fire, or property damage.
- WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Disconnect power at the circuit breaker or fuse box before installation or servicing.
- Installation should be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with all national and local electrical codes.
- Do not use this device with equipment that could cause injury or damage if activated unexpectedly.
- Ensure all connections are secure and properly insulated.

5. Setup and Installation
The Infracon Sensor 628A is designed for ceiling mount installation and requires connection to an Infracon Control 629A unit for operation.
5.1 Pre-Installation Checklist
- Ensure power is disconnected at the circuit breaker.
- Confirm you have an Infracon Control 629A unit available for connection.
- Gather necessary tools (e.g., screwdriver, wire strippers).
5.2 Mounting the Sensor
- Select a suitable ceiling location that provides optimal coverage for the desired area. Avoid placing near HVAC vents or other sources of rapid temperature changes that could cause false triggers.
- Cut an appropriate hole in the ceiling for the sensor body. Refer to the sensor's dimensions for precise hole size.
- Insert the sensor into the hole. The spring-loaded clips will secure the sensor to the ceiling.
5.3 Wiring Instructions
The Sensor 628A is powered by and communicates with the Infracon Control 629A. Connect the wires as follows:
- RED Wire: Connect to +15V DC Class 2 output from the Infracon Control 629A.
- BLACK Wire: Connect to 15V DC RETURN from the Infracon Control 629A.
- WHITE Wire: Connect to RELAY CONTROL input on the Infracon Control 629A.
Ensure all connections are tight and insulated. Refer to the Infracon Control 629A manual for its specific wiring terminals.
6. Operating Instructions
Once properly installed and connected to the Infracon Control 629A, the Sensor 628A operates automatically.
- Automatic Operation: The sensor detects motion within its field of view. When motion is detected, it signals the Infracon Control 629A to turn ON the connected lighting.
- Occupancy Detection: The sensor continuously monitors for occupancy. As long as motion is detected, the lights will remain ON.
- Vacancy Detection: After the last detected motion, the sensor will initiate a countdown (time delay set on the Infracon Control 629A). If no further motion is detected during this period, the lights will turn OFF.
Note: All adjustable settings, such as time delay and sensitivity, are typically configured on the connected Infracon Control 629A unit, not directly on the Sensor 628A.
7. Maintenance
The Infracon Sensor 628A requires minimal maintenance to ensure optimal performance.
- Cleaning: Periodically wipe the sensor lens with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust or debris. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Inspection: Annually inspect the sensor for any physical damage or loose connections.
Important: Always disconnect power before performing any maintenance.
8. Troubleshooting
If the sensor is not functioning as expected, refer to the following common issues and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Lights do not turn ON with motion. | No power to the sensor or control unit. Incorrect wiring. Sensor lens obstructed. Sensor or control unit malfunction. | Check circuit breaker and power connections. Verify wiring connections to Infracon Control 629A (Red, Black, White). Clean sensor lens. Ensure no objects block the sensor's view. Consult the Infracon Control 629A manual for further diagnostics. |
| Lights remain ON or turn OFF too quickly/slowly. | Time delay or sensitivity settings on the Infracon Control 629A are incorrect. Sensor is detecting unwanted motion (e.g., HVAC drafts). | Adjust time delay and sensitivity settings on the Infracon Control 629A. Relocate the sensor or adjust its position to minimize detection of non-occupant motion. |
| Lights flicker or behave erratically. | Loose wiring connection. Incompatible lighting load. Faulty sensor or control unit. | Check all wiring connections for tightness. Ensure lighting load is compatible with the Infracon Control 629A. If issues persist, contact customer support. |
For issues not listed here, or if troubleshooting steps do not resolve the problem, please contact Infracon customer support.
