5. Operating Instructions
Brewing Coffee
- Fill Water Tank: Open the lid of the water tank and fill it with fresh, cold water to the desired level, using the markings on the tank.
- Add Coffee Grounds:
- Swing out the filter holder.
- Insert a paper filter (size 1x4 or similar) or ensure the reusable filter is clean and in place.
- Add the desired amount of ground coffee into the filter. A general guideline is one tablespoon of coffee per cup (5 oz). Adjust to taste.
- Swing the filter holder back into position until it clicks securely.
- Place Carafe: Ensure the thermal carafe is empty and its lid is properly closed. Place it firmly on the base plate.
- Start Brewing: Plug the power cord into a wall outlet. Press the On/Off switch. The indicator light will illuminate, and brewing will begin.
- Auto-Off Function: The coffee maker features an automatic shut-off function, typically after 15 minutes of inactivity, to save energy.
- Serve: Once brewing is complete, the coffee will be kept warm in the thermal carafe. Remove the carafe from the machine to serve.

Making Iced Coffee
The Melitta Easy Top Thermo LKT-1001 can also be used to prepare iced coffee:
- Prepare Ice: Fill the thermal carafe directly with ice cubes. The amount of ice should correspond to the desired volume of iced coffee.
- Brew Strong Coffee: Brew a stronger batch of coffee than usual, as the melting ice will dilute it. Use less water in the tank and/or more coffee grounds in the filter.
- Brew Directly Over Ice: Place the carafe with ice on the base plate and start the brewing process as usual. The hot coffee will brew directly over the ice, chilling it instantly.
- Serve: Once brewing is complete, stir gently and serve your iced coffee.

6. Cleaning and Maintenance
Regular cleaning ensures optimal performance and extends the lifespan of your coffee maker.
Daily Cleaning
- Always unplug the appliance before cleaning.
- Wash the thermal carafe, its lid, and the filter holder in warm, soapy water after each use. Rinse thoroughly and dry. These parts are generally not dishwasher safe unless specified.
- Wipe the exterior of the coffee maker with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads.
- Never immerse the main unit (with electrical components) in water or any other liquid.
Descaling
Mineral deposits from water can build up in your coffee maker over time, affecting performance and taste. Descale your appliance regularly, depending on water hardness and frequency of use (e.g., every 2-3 months).
- Use a commercial descaling solution specifically designed for coffee makers, following the manufacturer's instructions. Alternatively, a solution of white vinegar and water (1:2 ratio) can be used.
- Fill the water tank with the descaling solution.
- Place the empty thermal carafe on the base plate.
- Start a brewing cycle. Allow half of the solution to brew through, then turn off the machine and let it sit for 15-20 minutes.
- Turn the machine back on and allow the remaining solution to brew through.
- After descaling, run at least two full cycles with fresh, clean water to rinse out any residual descaling solution.
7. Troubleshooting
