Attach the supplied antenna to the antenna connector on the top of the transceiver by screwing it clockwise until it is finger-tight. Do not overtighten.
3. Belt Clip Attachment
Attach the belt clip to the back of the transceiver using the provided screws. Ensure it is firmly secured for safe carrying.
Operating Instructions
1. Power On/Off and Volume Control
To turn the transceiver on, rotate the top knob clockwise. Continue rotating to adjust the volume level. To turn off, rotate the knob counter-clockwise until it clicks.
2. Frequency Selection (VFO Mode)
In VFO (Variable Frequency Oscillator) mode, you can manually select frequencies.
- Press the V/M key to switch to VFO mode if you are in Memory mode.
- Use the Up/Down arrow keys (above P4) to change the frequency in steps.
- Alternatively, use the numeric keypad to directly enter the desired frequency. For example, to enter 146.520 MHz, press 1 4 6 . 5 2 0.
3. Transmitting
Before transmitting, ensure you are on a clear frequency and have the appropriate license.
- Select the desired frequency.

- Replace the battery when its operating time significantly decreases.
- Antenna: Regularly check the antenna for any signs of damage or wear. Ensure it is securely attached.
- Storage: When not in use, store the transceiver in a clean, dry environment, away from extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, and excessive dust.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your FT-65/FT-65R, refer to the table below for common problems and their solutions.
Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
---|---|---|
No power / Unit does not turn on. | Battery is discharged or not properly installed. | Charge the battery fully. Ensure the battery is correctly installed and latched. |
Poor reception or transmission range. | Antenna not properly attached or damaged. Obstructions (buildings, terrain). Low power output setting. | Ensure antenna is securely attached. Move to an open area. Select a higher power output setting (5W). |
No audio from speaker. | Volume too low. Squelch level too high. External speaker/mic connected. | Increase volume. Adjust squelch level (lower it). Disconnect external accessories if not in use. |
Transceiver gets warm during operation. | Normal during extended transmission, especially at high power. | This is normal. If it becomes excessively hot, reduce transmission time or power output. |
If the problem persists after trying these solutions, please contact Yaesu customer support or an authorized service center.
