HPC Optics SFP-TGD-SX-HPC 1000BASE-SX SFP Transceiver User Manual

Model: SFP-TGD-SX-HPC

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the proper installation, operation, and maintenance of your HPC Optics SFP-TGD-SX-HPC 1000BASE-SX SFP Transceiver. This transceiver is designed for high-performance integrated duplex data link over multimode fiber.

2. Safety Information

Please read and understand all safety precautions before installing or operating this device. Failure to do so may result in injury or damage to the equipment.

  • This device is an optical transceiver. Do not look directly into the optical ports when the device is powered on, as this may cause eye damage.
  • Handle the SFP transceiver with care. Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage electronic components. Use appropriate ESD protection when handling.
  • Ensure proper ventilation around the equipment where the SFP is installed to prevent overheating.
  • Only use this product in environments within its specified operating temperature and humidity ranges.

3. Product Overview

The HPC Optics SFP-TGD-SX-HPC is a 1000BASE-SX Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) transceiver module. It is fully compatible with MRV SFP-TGD-SX and designed for use with Gigabit Ethernet links over multimode fiber. Key features include hot-pluggability, a 1.25Gbps data rate, 850nm wavelength, and support for distances up to 550 meters using Duplex LC connectors and Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM).

4. Setup

Follow these steps to install the SFP-TGD-SX-HPC transceiver into a compatible network device:

  1. Prepare the Device: Ensure the host network device (switch, router, media converter) is powered off or that the SFP port is configured for hot-swapping. Consult your host device's manual for specific instructions.
  2. Remove Protective Cap: Carefully remove the protective dust cap from the SFP transceiver's optical ports. Store the cap for future use.
  3. Insert SFP: Hold the SFP transceiver by its edges and gently slide it into the designated SFP port on the host device. Ensure the orientation is correct. You should feel a slight click as it locks into place.
  4. Connect Fiber Optic Cables: Connect the appropriate Duplex LC multimode fiber optic cables to the SFP transceiver's optical ports. Ensure the transmit (TX) port on one end connects to the receive (RX) port on the other end, and vice-versa.
  5. Verify Connection: Power on the host device (if it was off) and check the link status indicators. A solid green or amber light typically indicates a successful link. Refer to your host device's documentation for LED interpretations.

Note: This SFP is hot-pluggable, meaning it can be inserted or removed while the host device is powered on, provided the host device supports this feature. Always exercise caution and follow the host device's guidelines.

5. Operating Instructions

Once installed and connected, the SFP-TGD-SX-HPC transceiver operates automatically to establish a 1000BASE-SX Gigabit Ethernet link. It functions as a media converter, translating electrical signals from the host device into optical signals for transmission over multimode fiber, and vice-versa.

  • Data Transmission: The transceiver supports a 1.25Gbps data rate, enabling high-speed data transfer over the connected fiber optic network.
  • Wavelength: It operates at an 850nm wavelength, optimized for short-reach multimode fiber applications.
  • DDM Functionality: Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM) allows for real-time monitoring of the transceiver's operating parameters, such as optical output power, optical input power, temperature, laser bias current, and transceiver supply voltage. This data can be accessed via the host device's management interface (e.g., CLI or GUI).

6. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your SFP transceiver.

  • Cleaning Optical Ports: Keep the optical ports clean. Dust and contaminants can significantly degrade optical performance. Use only approved fiber optic cleaning tools and methods. Never use abrasive materials.
  • Storage: When not in use, always replace the protective dust caps on the SFP transceiver's optical ports. Store the transceiver in a clean, dry, and static-free environment.
  • Handling: Avoid touching the electrical contacts or optical surfaces. Handle the transceiver by its metal casing.
  • Environmental Conditions: Ensure the operating environment remains within the specified temperature and humidity ranges to prevent condensation or overheating.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your SFP-TGD-SX-HPC transceiver, consider the following troubleshooting steps:

  • No Link Light:
    • Verify the SFP is fully seated in the host device's port.
    • Check that the fiber optic cables are correctly connected (TX to RX, RX to TX) and not damaged.
    • Ensure the fiber optic cables are clean and free of dust.
    • Confirm the SFP is compatible with the host device and the other end of the link.
    • Check the host device's port configuration.
  • Intermittent Link or Low Performance:
    • Inspect fiber optic cables for bends, kinks, or damage.
    • Clean the SFP's optical ports and fiber connectors.
    • Check DDM readings (if available) for abnormal optical power levels or temperature.
    • Ensure the fiber type (multimode) and length are within the SFP's specifications (up to 550m).
  • SFP Not Recognized:
    • Remove and re-insert the SFP.
    • Verify the host device's firmware is up to date and supports the SFP module.
    • Test the SFP in a different, known-good port or device if possible.
