Setup

1. Installing Drives

  1. Carefully slide open the enclosure cover.
  2. Connect your 2.5-inch SATA SSDs or HDDs to the internal SATA connectors. Ensure they are seated firmly.
  3. Secure the drives using the provided screws and mini screwdriver.
  4. Slide the enclosure cover back into place until it clicks securely.

2. Configuring RAID Mode

The HUR6-SU31C supports four modes: JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1, and Single Disk Mode. The RAID mode is set using the DIP switches on the rear panel. Always configure RAID mode BEFORE connecting to your computer and BEFORE installing any drives with data you wish to keep, as changing modes will erase all data on the drives.

RAID Mode Settings
ModeDIP Switch 1DIP Switch 2Description
SingleOFFOFFEach drive appears as an independent volume.
JBODONOFFDrives are combined into a single large volume, but data is written sequentially. No redundancy.
RAID 0OFFONData is striped across both drives for maximum performance. No redundancy; failure of one drive means data loss.
RAID 1ONONData is mirrored across both drives for redundancy. Half the total storage capacity, but data is protected if one drive fails.

After setting the DIP switches, press and hold the Reset Button for 5 seconds to apply the new RAID configuration. The enclosure will then format the drives according to the selected mode.

3. Connecting to Computer

Connect the enclosure to your computer using the provided USB Type-C to Type-C cable or USB Type-C to Type-A cable. For optimal performance, use a USB 3.1 Gen 2 compatible port on your computer.

4. Power Connection (Optional)

For most SSDs, the enclosure can draw sufficient power directly from the USB connection. However, for some HDDs or if your USB port does not provide enough power, an optional 5V DC power adapter (not included) can be connected to the DC IN port. This is recommended for stable operation, especially with HDDs.

Operating Instructions

LED Indicators

  • Solid Blue: Drive is powered on and idle.
  • Flashing Blue: Drive activity (reading or writing data).

Data Transfer

Once connected and recognized by your operating system, the enclosure will appear as a storage device. You can drag and drop files, or use backup software as you would with any other external drive. The USB 3.1 Gen 2 interface provides transfer speeds up to 10Gbps, significantly faster than older USB standards.

Figure 5: USB 3.1 Gen 2 offers up to 10Gbps transfer speed.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the enclosure. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents.
  • Ventilation: Ensure the enclosure is placed in a well-ventilated area to allow for proper heat dissipation. Avoid blocking any vents.
  • Firmware Updates: Periodically check the Mediasonic website for any available firmware updates for your model to ensure optimal performance and compatibility.

Troubleshooting

Device Not Recognized

  • Ensure all cables are securely connected.
  • Try a different USB port on your computer.
  • If using HDDs, connect an optional external power adapter.
  • Verify that the drives are properly installed and seated within the enclosure.
  • Check your computer's Disk Management (Windows) or Disk Utility (macOS) to see if the drives are detected but unformatted or uninitialized.

Slow Transfer Speeds

  • Ensure you are connected to a USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps) port on your computer. Older USB ports will result in lower speeds.
  • Verify the quality of your USB cable. Use the provided cable or a certified USB 3.1 Gen 2 cable.
  • The performance of your drives (SSD vs. HDD) and their individual speeds will affect overall transfer rates.

Enclosure Runs Hot

  • It is normal for the enclosure to generate some heat during operation, especially with HDDs or during heavy data transfer.
  • Ensure adequate airflow around the enclosure. Do not place it in an enclosed space.
  • If using HDDs, consider using the optional external power adapter to reduce strain on the USB power delivery.

Data Loss After RAID Configuration Change

Changing RAID modes will erase all data on the installed drives. Always back up your data before changing RAID configurations. This is expected behavior for hardware RAID controllers.
