3. Setup
Your Faber-Castell e-motion fountain pen is designed for use with either ink cartridges or a converter for bottled ink. A converter is included with your pen.
3.1 Installing an Ink Cartridge:
- Unscrew the barrel from the grip section by twisting counter-clockwise.
- Remove any empty cartridge or the converter if it is installed.
- Insert a new standard international ink cartridge firmly into the grip section until you feel it puncture.
- Re-attach the barrel by twisting clockwise until secure.
- Allow a few minutes for the ink to saturate the feed and nib before writing. Gently shaking the pen or lightly touching the nib to a piece of paper can help initiate ink flow.
3.2 Filling with the Ink Converter (Bottled Ink):
- Unscrew the barrel from the grip section.
- Ensure the converter is securely inserted into the grip section.
- Twist the converter's piston mechanism counter-clockwise until the piston is fully extended towards the nib.
- Submerge the entire nib and part of the grip section into a bottle of fountain pen ink.
- Slowly twist the converter's piston mechanism clockwise to draw ink into the converter.
- Remove the nib from the ink bottle and gently twist the piston slightly counter-clockwise to expel a few drops of ink, then clockwise again to draw a small air bubble. This helps clear any air from the feed.
- Wipe any excess ink from the nib and grip section with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Re-attach the barrel by twisting clockwise until secure.

4. Operating the Pen
4.1 Uncapping and Capping:
The cap of the e-motion fountain pen is secured by a twist mechanism. To remove the cap, twist it counter-clockwise. To replace the cap, align it and twist clockwise until it is securely fastened. Note: The cap is not designed to be posted (placed on the back end of the barrel while writing).

4.2 Writing:
Hold the pen comfortably, allowing the nib to glide smoothly across the paper. Fountain pens require minimal pressure; excessive force can damage the nib. The Extra Fine nib provides a precise line suitable for detailed writing.
5. Maintenance
Regular cleaning ensures optimal performance and prevents ink clogs.
5.1 Routine Cleaning:
- If using a cartridge, remove it. If using a converter, expel any remaining ink.
- Flush the nib and feed section with cool, clean water. You can do this by repeatedly drawing water into and expelling it from the converter, or by running water over the nib and feed.
- Continue flushing until the water runs clear.
- Gently dry the nib and grip section with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Allow the pen to air dry completely before re-inking or storing.
5.2 Long-Term Storage:
For extended periods of non-use, it is recommended to thoroughly clean the pen as described above and store it without ink. This prevents ink from drying out and clogging the feed system.
6. Troubleshooting
6.1 Ink Flow Issues (Skipping, Hard Starts):
- Check Ink Level: Ensure there is sufficient ink in the cartridge or converter.
- Clean the Nib and Feed: Dried ink is a common cause of flow issues. Perform a routine cleaning (Section 5.1).
- Check for Blockages: Inspect the nib tines for any debris or paper fibers.
- Ink Compatibility: Ensure you are using fountain pen specific ink. Other inks can damage the pen or cause flow problems.
6.2 Leaking:
- Secure Connections: Ensure the cartridge or converter is firmly seated and the barrel is tightly screwed on.
- Temperature Changes: Rapid temperature changes can cause ink to expand or contract, leading to minor leaks. Avoid leaving the pen in extreme temperatures.
- Damage: Inspect the nib and feed for any visible damage. If damage is present, contact customer support.
