4. Setup and First Use
Before using your steamer for the first time, follow these steps:
- Unpack: Carefully remove all packaging materials and dispose of them responsibly.
- Clean: Wash the lid, steam trays, and drip tray in warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry. Wipe the base unit with a damp cloth. Do not immerse the base unit in water.
- Assemble: Place the drip tray onto the base unit. Stack the desired number of steam trays on top of the drip tray. Place the lid on the uppermost tray.
- Initial Run (Optional but Recommended): Fill the water reservoir to the MAX level. Run the steamer for 20-30 minutes without food to remove any manufacturing residues. Discard the water and clean the trays again.
5. Operating Instructions
Follow these steps to operate your HOWELL VP800 Steamer:
- Fill Water Reservoir: Ensure the steamer is unplugged. Fill the water reservoir with clean cold water up to the MAX fill line. Do not overfill. You can add water during operation using the external water inlet if available, or by carefully removing trays and adding water directly.
- Add Aroma (Optional): If desired, place herbs, spices, or citrus peels into the aroma infuser located in the drip tray or base.
- Place Food: Arrange food in the steam trays. Do not overcrowd the trays to allow steam to circulate freely. For best results, place foods requiring longer cooking times in the lower trays.
- Assemble Steamer: Place the drip tray onto the base unit, then stack the filled steam trays, and finally place the lid securely on top.
- Plug In: Connect the power cord to a suitable electrical outlet (230V).
- Set Timer: Turn the timer dial clockwise to your desired cooking time (up to 60 minutes). The steamer will begin to heat and produce steam. The indicator light (if present) will illuminate.
- Monitor Water Level: Periodically check the water level indicator during long cooking periods. If the water level is too low, carefully add more water.
- Cooking Complete: Once the set time has elapsed, the steamer will automatically switch off, and a bell may sound.
- Serve: Carefully remove the lid (steam will be hot!) and then the steam trays using oven mitts. Serve food immediately.
- Unplug: Always unplug the steamer from the power outlet after use.
General Steaming Guidelines:
- Vegetables: 10-20 minutes (depending on type and size).
- Fish/Seafood: 8-15 minutes.
- Poultry: 20-30 minutes (ensure internal temperature reaches safe levels).
- Eggs: 10-15 minutes for hard-boiled.
Note: Cooking times are approximate and may vary based on food quantity, density, and personal preference. Always ensure food is thoroughly cooked before consumption.
6. Cleaning and Maintenance
Regular cleaning ensures the longevity and hygiene of your steamer.
- Unplug and Cool: Always unplug the appliance and allow it to cool completely before cleaning.
- Wash Removable Parts: The lid, steam trays, and drip tray can be washed in warm, soapy water or placed in the top rack of a dishwasher. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
- Clean Base Unit: Wipe the exterior of the base unit with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scourers. Never immerse the base unit in water.
- Descaling: Over time, mineral deposits (limescale) may build up in the water reservoir. To descale, fill the reservoir with a mixture of 1 part white vinegar and 2 parts water. Run the steamer for 20-30 minutes. Unplug, let cool, then empty and rinse the reservoir thoroughly several times with fresh water. Repeat if necessary. Descale every 1-2 months depending on water hardness.
- Storage: Ensure all parts are clean and dry before storing. Store the steamer in a cool, dry place. The trays can be nested for compact storage.
