Precision Lock PLS-24 PRO Concealed Magnetic Catch User Manual

Model: PLS-24 PRO

1. Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your Precision Lock PLS-24 PRO Concealed Magnetic Catch. Designed for discreet and effective door and cabinet closure, this product offers a strong magnetic hold without visible hardware. Please read this manual thoroughly before installation and use to ensure proper function and safety.

2. Safety Information

WARNING: Use extreme caution when handling magnets. The attractant forces are very powerful. If allowed to snap together violently, small sharp chips can be thrown off, potentially causing injury. Keep magnets away from sensitive electronic devices, pacemakers, and magnetic storage media.

  • Always handle magnets carefully to avoid pinching fingers or damaging the product.
  • Keep magnets away from children.
  • Do not ingest magnets.
  • Dispose of damaged magnets responsibly.

3. Package Contents

Verify that all components are present before beginning installation:

  • Concealed Magnetic Catch (Magnet and Housing)
  • Steel Attractant Plate

4. Installation Instructions

Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance. Follow these steps carefully:

4.1 Tools Required

  • Drill
  • 15/16" or 1" Spade Bit (or Forstner bit)
  • Pencil
  • Measuring Tape
  • Screwdriver

4.2 Preparing the Door and Jamb

  1. Determine the desired location for the magnetic catch on your door and door jamb. The catch is typically installed on the top edge of the door and the corresponding top frame of the jamb.
  2. Using a pencil, mark the center point for drilling on both the door and the door jamb. Ensure these points align when the door is closed.
  3. Drill a 15/16" or 1" diameter hole approximately 3/8" deep into both the door and the door jamb at the marked locations. A spade bit or Forstner bit is recommended for clean holes.
  4. Important: The magnet housing in the door jamb must be offset slightly towards the doorstop. This ensures the door pulls tightly against the doorstop when closed.

4.3 Installing the Magnetic Components

  1. Insert the magnet housing (EziFit s/steel housing cup with magnet) into the drilled hole in the door jamb. Secure it with the provided screw.
  2. Insert the steel attractant plate into the drilled hole in the door. This plate has a self-adhesive backing for temporary positioning, but it must also be secured with screws for a strong, permanent hold.
  3. Adjusting Magnetic Holding Strength: To increase the magnetic holding strength, use the provided Power Adjustment Spacer Rings. These rings are placed behind the steel attractant plate to decrease the "air gap" between the magnet and the plate. For maximum strength, aim for an air gap of approximately 1mm (3/64").
  4. Once the components are securely installed, apply the self-adhesive stainless steel coverplates over the installed parts for a concealed finish and corrosion protection.

4.4 Installing Rubber Buffers (for Single Doors)

  • For single doors, install the drill-in rubber buffers. These are typically fitted approximately 4" up from the bottom of the door, positioned to contact the door stop. This helps prevent the door from banging.
  • Optional: For enhanced noise reduction and impact absorption, PoronXrD foam impact absorption pads (model PF10PK) are available separately.

5. Operation

The Precision Lock PLS-24 PRO Concealed Magnetic Catch operates by utilizing the strong magnetic force between the magnet in the door jamb and the steel attractant plate in the door. When the door is closed, the magnet pulls the door firmly into its closed position, holding it securely without the need for traditional latches or visible hardware. The concealed design ensures a clean aesthetic.

6. Maintenance

The Precision Lock PLS-24 PRO Concealed Magnetic Catch requires minimal maintenance:

  • Cleaning: Wipe the stainless steel coverplates with a soft, damp cloth if they become dirty. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
  • Inspection: Periodically check the screws for tightness. Ensure the magnetic components remain securely seated in their drilled holes.
  • Functionality: If the magnetic hold weakens over time, verify the alignment of the magnet and attractant plate. Adjust the spacer rings if necessary to reduce the air gap.

7. Troubleshooting

  • Door does not hold securely:
    • Ensure the magnet and attractant plate are perfectly aligned.
    • Reduce the air gap between the magnet and the plate by adding or adjusting the Power Adjustment Spacer Rings.
    • Verify that both components are securely fastened with screws.
  • Door is difficult to open:
    • The magnetic force may be too strong. Increase the air gap slightly by removing a spacer ring or ensuring the components are not too close.
  • Visible hardware after installation:
    • Ensure the self-adhesive stainless steel coverplates are properly applied over the installed components.
