Instruction Manual
UCP204-12 Cast Iron Pillow Block Mounted Bearing
Model: 1-UCP204-12 | Brand: BC Precision
1. Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the proper installation, operation, and maintenance of the BC Precision UCP204-12 Cast Iron Pillow Block Mounted Bearing. Adhering to these instructions will ensure optimal performance and longevity of the product. This bearing is designed for mounting onto bearing surfaces parallel to the shaft axis, commonly used in industrial manufacturing, food and beverage manufacturing, and the textile industry.
2. Safety Information
Always prioritize safety when working with machinery and industrial components. Failure to follow safety precautions can result in serious injury or damage to equipment.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses and gloves.
- Ensure all power to machinery is disconnected and locked out before installation, maintenance, or inspection.
- Handle heavy components with care and use proper lifting techniques or equipment.
- Do not operate the bearing beyond its specified load ratings or speed limits.
- Keep hands and loose clothing away from rotating parts.
3. Product Overview
The UCP204-12 pillow block mounted bearing is a ready-to-mount unit featuring a cast iron housing and chrome steel bearings. It is designed for efficient operation across various speeds and supports both dynamic (radial) and static (axial) loads.

Key Features:
- Self-Aligning Feature: The internal sleeve is designed to have some play, allowing it to self-align with the shaft, which is not a defect.
- Durable Construction: Cast iron housing with UC204-12 chrome steel bearing.
- Secure Shaft Attachment: Features a set screw to prevent shaft slippage.
- Load Capacity: Dynamic (radial) load rating of 12.8 kN and static (axial) load rating of 6.65 kN.
- Standard Size: 3/4" inch inside diameter fits conventional cylindrical shafts.

4. Setup and Installation
Proper installation is crucial for the performance and lifespan of the bearing. Ensure the mounting surface is clean, flat, and rigid.
Installation Steps:
- Prepare Mounting Surface: Clean any debris or rust from the surface where the pillow block will be mounted.
- Position the Bearing: Place the UCP204-12 pillow block onto the prepared surface, aligning the mounting holes with pre-drilled holes on the equipment.
- Secure the Housing: The housing requires two 3/8” bolts (sold separately). Insert the bolts through the mounting holes and secure them firmly. Do not overtighten initially.
- Insert the Shaft: Carefully slide the 3/4" inch cylindrical shaft through the inner ring of the bearing.
- Tighten Set Screws: Once the shaft is in position, tighten the set screws on the inner ring to prevent slippage. Ensure the shaft is properly seated and aligned.
- Final Tightening: Fully tighten the mounting bolts, ensuring the bearing is securely fastened to the surface.

5. Operating Instructions
The UCP204-12 bearing is designed for continuous operation within its specified load and speed limits. Ensure the shaft is properly aligned and the bearing is adequately lubricated before initial operation.
- Initial Run-in: For new installations, operate the machinery at a reduced speed for a short period to allow the bearing to seat properly.
- Monitoring: Regularly monitor the bearing for unusual noise, vibration, or excessive heat during operation. These can indicate issues requiring immediate attention.
- Load and Speed: Do not exceed the dynamic (radial) load rating of 12.8 kN or the static (axial) load rating of 6.65 kN. Refer to machinery specifications for appropriate operating speeds.
6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance extends the life of your bearing and ensures reliable performance.
Lubrication:
The bearing is equipped with a grease fitting for lubrication. Use a high-quality, general-purpose lithium-based grease suitable for industrial bearings. The frequency of lubrication depends on operating conditions (speed, load, temperature, environment). A general guideline is to lubricate every 1-6 months for typical industrial use.
- Apply grease slowly until a slight bead appears around the seals. Avoid over-greasing.
- Clean the grease fitting before and after lubrication to prevent contamination.
Inspection:
- Periodically inspect the bearing housing for cracks, corrosion, or damage.
- Check the tightness of mounting bolts and set screws.
- Listen for unusual noises (grinding, squealing) and feel for excessive heat or vibration.
- Inspect seals for signs of wear or damage, which can lead to lubricant loss or contamination.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Excessive Noise | Lack of lubrication, contamination, misalignment, worn bearing. | Lubricate, clean, check alignment, replace bearing if worn. |
| Overheating | Over-greasing, insufficient lubrication, excessive load, misalignment. | Adjust lubrication, reduce load, check alignment. |
| Shaft Slippage | Loose set screws. | Tighten set screws securely. |
| Vibration | Misalignment, unbalanced shaft, worn bearing. | Check and correct alignment, balance shaft, replace bearing. |
