Lens Components:

3. Setup
3.1 Attaching the Lens to Your Camera
- Ensure both the camera and lens are powered off.
- Align the mounting index marks on the lens and camera body.
- Rotate the lens clockwise (for Canon EF mount) until it clicks into place. Do not force the lens.
3.2 Attaching the Lens Hood
Align the lens hood with the front of the lens, matching the alignment marks. Rotate the hood clockwise until it locks securely. The lens hood helps to block extraneous light and protect the front element.
3.3 Using the Tripod Collar
The integrated tripod collar allows for balanced mounting on a tripod or monopod, especially important for a lens of this size and weight. The collar is Arca-Swiss compatible, enabling direct attachment to compatible tripod heads without an additional plate. To rotate the lens within the collar, loosen the locking knob, adjust the lens to the desired orientation, and then tighten the knob securely.
4. Operating the Lens
4.1 Autofocus (AF) and Manual Focus (MF)
The lens features an AF/MF switch. Set the switch to AF for automatic focusing. For manual focusing, set the switch to MF and rotate the focus ring to achieve desired sharpness. Ensure your camera is also set to the appropriate focus mode.
4.2 Vibration Compensation (VC)
The VC mechanism reduces blur caused by camera shake. The lens offers three VC modes:
- VC Mode 1: Standard mode, balancing viewfinder stability and compensation effects.
- VC Mode 2: Exclusively for panning, compensating for vertical camera shake.
- VC Mode 3: Prioritizes compensation of camera shake at the moment of exposure, providing maximum stabilization for still subjects.
Use the VC ON/OFF switch to activate or deactivate the Vibration Compensation system. Select the appropriate mode using the VC MODE switch.
4.3 Zooming and FLEX ZOOM LOCK
Rotate the zoom ring to adjust the focal length between 150mm and 600mm. The FLEX ZOOM LOCK mechanism allows you to lock the zoom ring at any position by sliding the lock lever. This prevents the lens from extending or retracting unintentionally, especially when carrying the camera or shooting at an upward/downward angle. To unlock, slide the lever back.
4.4 Focus Limiter Switch
The focus limiter switch restricts the autofocus range, which can improve AF speed when subjects are within a known distance range. The available settings are:
- FULL: Allows focusing across the entire range (from minimum focusing distance to infinity).
- 10m - ∞: Limits focusing to subjects 10 meters (approximately 33 feet) or further.
- 2.2m - 10m: Limits focusing to subjects between 2.2 meters (approximately 7.2 feet) and 10 meters.
5. Maintenance
5.1 Cleaning the Lens
- Use a soft, clean microfiber cloth to gently wipe dust and smudges from the lens elements.
- For stubborn marks, use a small amount of lens cleaning fluid applied to the cloth, not directly to the lens.
- Avoid touching the lens elements with your fingers.
- Clean the lens barrel with a soft, dry cloth.
5.2 Storage
- Store the lens in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Always attach the front and rear lens caps when not in use.
- If storing for extended periods, consider using a dehumidifier or desiccant to prevent mold growth.
5.3 Handling Precautions
- Avoid exposing the lens to sudden temperature changes, which can cause condensation.
- Do not drop or subject the lens to strong impacts.
- Keep the lens away from strong magnetic fields.
6. Troubleshooting
Common Issues and Solutions:
- Lens not focusing: Check if the AF/MF switch on the lens is set to AF. Ensure the camera's focus mode is also set to autofocus. Verify the focus limiter switch is set appropriately for your subject distance.
- Images are blurry: Ensure the VC (Vibration Compensation) is ON if shooting handheld in low light. Check your shutter speed; a faster shutter speed may be required, especially at longer focal lengths. Verify the lens is clean.
- Zoom ring is stiff or locked: Check the FLEX ZOOM LOCK lever. If it is engaged, disengage it to allow free zooming.
- Lens not recognized by camera: Ensure the lens is securely attached to the camera body. Power cycle both the camera and lens. Clean the electrical contacts on both the lens mount and camera body with a clean, dry cloth.
