Advanced Disk Configurations

Image: Diagram illustrating the various RAID configurations supported by the Mediasonic ProRaid HUR5-SU3-V2, including Single, JBOD, RAID 0, and RAID 1.
- SINGLE: Two individual drives. Each drive is recognized as a separate volume.
- JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks): Spanning. Combines the capacity of both drives into a single large volume without performance or redundancy benefits.
- RAID 0 (Striping): Combines both drives into a single volume for increased performance. Data is striped across both drives, meaning if one drive fails, all data is lost.
- RAID 1 (Mirroring): Creates a mirrored copy of data on both drives. Provides data redundancy; if one drive fails, data is still accessible from the other. The total usable capacity is that of a single drive.
Setup Guide
1. Hard Drive Installation
- Ensure the enclosure is powered off and disconnected from your computer.
- Carefully slide open the enclosure cover.
- Insert your 3.5-inch SATA hard drives into the bays. Ensure they are securely seated into the SATA connectors.
- Secure the hard drives using the provided screws.
- Close the enclosure cover.
2. RAID Mode Configuration
Before connecting to your computer, configure the desired RAID mode using the switches on the rear panel. Refer to the diagram on the device or the "Key Features and RAID Configurations" section for switch settings.
- Set Switch 1 and Switch 2 to the positions corresponding to your desired RAID mode (SINGLE, JBOD, RAID 0, or RAID 1).
- After setting the switches, press and hold the Confirmation Button (CFM BTN) for approximately 3-5 seconds until the indicator lights confirm the change.
- Note: Changing RAID modes will erase all data on the hard drives. Back up any important data before proceeding.
3. Connecting to Computer
- Connect the power adapter to the DC IN port on the enclosure and plug it into a power outlet.
- Connect one end of the USB 3.0 cable to the USB 3.0 port on the enclosure.
- Connect the other end of the USB 3.0 cable to an available USB 3.0 port on your computer.
- Press the Power Button on the front or rear panel to turn on the enclosure.
4. Initial Disk Setup (Windows/macOS)
After connecting, the operating system will detect the new hardware. For new hard drives or after changing RAID modes, you will need to initialize and format the disk(s).
For Windows:
- Right-click on "This PC" or "My Computer" and select "Manage".
- In the Computer Management window, select "Disk Management".
- Locate the newly detected disk(s). They will likely appear as "Unallocated" or "Not Initialized".
- Right-click on the disk and select "Initialize Disk". Choose MBR (Master Boot Record) for disks up to 2TB or GPT (GUID Partition Table) for disks larger than 2TB.
- Once initialized, right-click on the unallocated space and select "New Simple Volume" to format and assign a drive letter. Follow the on-screen wizard.
For macOS:
- Open "Disk Utility" (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility).
- Select the newly detected disk from the sidebar.
- Click on "Erase".
- Choose a format (e.g., APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled)) and a scheme (e.g., GUID Partition Map).
- Click "Erase" to format the disk.
Operating Instructions
Power On/Off
- To power on, press the power button. The indicator lights will illuminate.
- To power off, press the power button again. Ensure all data transfers are complete before powering off.
- The enclosure supports Power Sync, meaning it can power on/off automatically with your connected computer.
Data Transfer
Once the drives are recognized and formatted by your operating system, you can drag and drop files to and from the enclosure like any other external drive. The USB 3.0 interface with UASP support ensures fast data transfer speeds.
Ejecting the Device
Always safely eject the device from your operating system before disconnecting the USB cable or powering off the enclosure to prevent data corruption.
- Windows: Click the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon in the system tray, then select the Mediasonic device.
- macOS: Drag the drive icon from your desktop to the Trash, or click the Eject button next to the drive name in Finder.
Maintenance
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the enclosure. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosols.
- Fan Maintenance: Periodically check the fan on the rear panel for dust accumulation. Use compressed air to gently clear any dust to ensure proper airflow and cooling.
- Environment: Operate the enclosure in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and excessive moisture.
- Hard Drive Health: Regularly check the health of your hard drives using appropriate disk utility software to prevent data loss.
Troubleshooting
- Device not detected by computer:
- Ensure the power adapter is securely connected and the enclosure is powered on.
- Verify the USB cable is properly connected to both the enclosure and the computer.
- Try a different USB port on your computer.
- Test with a different USB cable if available.
- Check Disk Management (Windows) or Disk Utility (macOS) to see if the disk is detected but uninitialized or unformatted.
- Hard drives not recognized after RAID mode change:
- Ensure you pressed and held the Confirmation Button (CFM BTN) after setting the RAID switches.
- Remember that changing RAID modes requires re-initialization and re-formatting of the drives. Follow the "Initial Disk Setup" steps.
- Slow data transfer speeds:
- Ensure you are connected to a USB 3.0 port on your computer. USB 2.0 ports will result in slower speeds.
- Verify your operating system supports UASP (Windows 8/10 or macOS 10.8 and later).
- The performance of the hard drives themselves can affect transfer speeds.
- Enclosure fan is noisy:
- Check for dust accumulation on the fan and clear it if necessary.
- Ensure the enclosure is in a well-ventilated area.
