Introduction
The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur Pro Rocket BE Baitcast Fishing Reel 6500 is engineered for superior casting performance and robust durability. This reel features a six-pin centrifugal braking system and a strong aluminum construction, reflecting a tradition of Swedish craftsmanship and design.
Product Features
- Lightweight Construction: The spool is crafted from machined aluminum, providing strength without excessive weight. The reel weighs 11.5 oz.
- 5 Total Bearings: Equipped with 4 stainless steel ball bearings plus 1 instant anti-reverse bearing for smooth operation.
- Recovery Rate: Recovers 26 inches (66 cm) of line per crank turn. Features a 5.3:1 gear ratio.
- 6-Pin Centrifugal Brake: Delivers consistent brake pressure throughout the cast for enhanced control.
- Carbon Star Drag: Offers a maximum drag of 15 lb (6.8 kg). The Carbon Matrix drag system ensures smooth, consistent pressure across the entire drag range.
- Line Capacity: Mono Capacity yd/lb: 390/10, 320/12, 225/17. Braid Capacity: 415/20, 310/30, 220/50.
- Right Handle Position: Features an extended bent handle for increased torque and efficient fighting power.
- Synchronized Level Wind System: Provides even line lay and a smooth retrieve.
Setup
1. Attaching the Reel to the Rod
Align the reel foot with the reel seat on your fishing rod. Secure the reel by tightening the reel seat nut until the reel is firmly in place. Ensure there is no wobble.
2. Spooling the Line
- Pass the fishing line through the line guide on the reel and then through the guides on the rod.
- Tie the line to the reel spool using an arbor knot or a similar secure knot.
- Close the bail (for spinning reels) or engage the clutch (for baitcast reels).
- Maintain slight tension on the line as you reel it onto the spool. The line should be wound evenly and tightly, filling the spool to about 1/8 inch from the rim. Avoid overfilling or underfilling.
3. Adjusting the Centrifugal Brake
The 6-pin centrifugal brake system helps control spool rotation during casting to prevent backlashes. To adjust, open the side plate of the reel. Engage 2-4 pins for initial setup; more pins provide more braking, which is useful for lighter lures or windy conditions. Disengage pins for less braking, suitable for heavier lures or experienced casters.
4. Adjusting the Spool Tension Knob
The spool tension knob controls the speed at which the spool rotates. With a lure tied on, hold the rod tip up and slowly loosen the spool tension knob until the lure slowly falls to the ground. The spool should stop rotating when the lure hits the ground. This is a good starting point for tension.
Operating Instructions
1. Casting
- Press the thumb bar to disengage the spool.
- Hold the lure with your thumb to prevent it from falling.
- Bring the rod back over your shoulder, then cast forward in a smooth motion.
- As the rod moves forward, release your thumb from the spool.
- Apply light thumb pressure to the spool as the lure approaches the water to prevent backlashing.
2. Retrieving
Turn the handle to engage the reel and retrieve your line. The synchronized level wind system will ensure the line is laid evenly across the spool.
3. Setting the Drag
The Carbon Star Drag system allows you to adjust the resistance the fish feels when pulling line. To set the drag, pull line directly from the reel. The drag should be set to about 25-30% of your line's breaking strength. Adjust the star-shaped drag knob to increase or decrease tension. The drag should allow line to be pulled out smoothly without jerking.
Maintenance
- Rinse After Use: After each use, especially in saltwater, lightly rinse the reel with fresh water to remove salt and debris. Do not submerge the reel.
- Lubrication: Periodically apply a small amount of reel oil to moving parts such as bearings, worm gear, and handle knobs. Use reel grease on gears. Refer to a detailed reel schematic for specific lubrication points.
- Line Inspection: Regularly inspect your fishing line for fraying, nicks, or wear. Replace damaged line promptly.
- Storage: Store the reel in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight. Loosen the drag completely before storage to prevent compression of drag washers.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Backlash during casting | Spool rotating too fast; insufficient thumb control; incorrect brake settings. | Increase centrifugal brake pins, tighten spool tension knob, improve thumb control during cast. |
| Stiff or grinding retrieve | Lack of lubrication; dirt/debris in gears; damaged components. | Clean and lubricate gears and bearings. If problem persists, professional service may be required. |
| Drag slipping or inconsistent | Worn or dirty drag washers; improper drag setting. | Clean or replace drag washers. Ensure drag is set correctly for your line strength. |
| Line not laying evenly | Issue with level wind mechanism; line guide obstructed. | Clean and inspect the level wind system and line guide for obstructions or damage. |
