Introduction

This manual provides instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of the IPW Industries Inc. 4-pack reverse osmosis replacement filter set. This set is designed for use with the Watts FMRO40-MAN reverse osmosis system with a 50 GPD (Gallons Per Day) capacity. Proper installation and regular maintenance are essential for optimal system performance and water quality.

Product Components

The IPW Industries Inc. replacement filter set includes the following components:

  • Two (2) 5-micron Coconut Shell Carbon Block Filters
  • One (1) 5-micron Polypropylene Sediment Filter
  • One (1) 50 GPD Reverse Osmosis (RO) Membrane

Compatibility

This replacement filter set is specifically designed for the Watts FMRO40-MAN reverse osmosis system with a 50 GPD membrane capacity. Ensure your existing system matches this model for proper fit and function.

Installation and Setup

Before beginning installation, ensure the main water supply to your RO system is turned off and the system pressure is relieved. Refer to your Watts FMRO40-MAN system's original instruction manual for specific housing opening and closing procedures.

General Filter Replacement Steps:

  1. Turn off Water Supply: Locate the cold water supply valve to your RO system and turn it off. Open the RO faucet to relieve pressure in the system.
  2. Remove Old Filters: Using a housing wrench (if necessary), carefully unscrew the filter housings. Remove and discard the old sediment and carbon block filters. For the RO membrane, disconnect the tubing and remove the membrane housing cap to extract the old membrane.
  3. Clean Housings: Clean the inside of the filter housings with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly to remove any soap residue. Inspect O-rings for damage and replace if necessary. Lubricate O-rings with food-grade silicone grease.
  4. Install New Filters:
    • Insert the new 5-micron sediment filter into its designated housing.
    • Insert the two new 5-micron carbon block filters into their respective housings.
    • Carefully insert the new 50 GPD RO membrane into its housing, ensuring the end with the two O-rings goes in first. Reconnect the tubing and secure the cap.
  5. Secure Housings: Hand-tighten all filter housings. Do not overtighten.
  6. Restore Water Supply: Slowly turn on the cold water supply valve to the RO system. Check for leaks.
  7. Flush System: Open the RO faucet and allow the system to flush for at least 24 hours (or as recommended by your system's manual) to remove air and carbon fines. The initial water may appear cloudy or discolored; this is normal.

Operation

After installation and initial flushing, your reverse osmosis system is ready for use. The system will continuously produce purified water, storing it in the pressure tank. When the RO faucet is opened, purified water will be dispensed.

It is normal for the system to produce a small amount of wastewater during the purification process. This wastewater carries away rejected contaminants and is discharged to the drain.

Maintenance and Filter Replacement Schedule

Regular filter replacement is crucial for maintaining the efficiency and effectiveness of your reverse osmosis system and ensuring consistent water quality. The following schedule is a general guideline; actual replacement frequency may vary based on local water quality and usage volume.

  • Sediment Filter (5 Micron Polypropylene): Replace every 6-12 months. This filter removes sediment, dirt, rust, and other particulate matter, protecting the carbon filters and RO membrane.
  • Carbon Block Filters (5 Micron Coconut Shell): Replace every 6-12 months. These filters remove chlorine, chloramines, unpleasant tastes, and odors from the water.
  • RO Membrane (50 GPD): Replace every 2-3 years. The RO membrane is the core of the system, responsible for removing dissolved solids, heavy metals, and other contaminants. Its lifespan is highly dependent on water quality and pre-filter maintenance.

Failure to replace filters on schedule can lead to reduced water flow, decreased water quality, and potential damage to the RO membrane.

Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your RO system after replacing filters, consider the following common problems and solutions:

  • Reduced Water Flow:
    • Ensure all valves are fully open.
    • Check for kinks in the tubing.
    • Verify that the pressure tank is adequately pressurized (refer to your system's manual).
    • If filters were recently changed, ensure proper flushing was completed.
  • Poor Water Taste or Odor:
    • Ensure carbon filters were replaced on schedule.
    • Confirm proper flushing after filter replacement to remove carbon fines.
    • If the RO membrane is old, it may need replacement.
  • Leaks:
    • Turn off the water supply immediately.
    • Check all connections and housing seals. Ensure O-rings are properly seated and not pinched or damaged.
    • Hand-tighten housings; avoid overtightening.

For persistent issues, consult your Watts FMRO40-MAN system's original manual or contact IPW Industries Inc. customer support.
