4. Setup

Proper setup is crucial for optimal performance and safety. Follow these steps to set up your AIR12 loudspeaker:

  1. Placement: Position the loudspeaker on a stable surface, speaker stand, or use appropriate flying hardware. Ensure adequate ventilation around the unit. The AIR12 can be used as a main PA speaker, a floor monitor (as shown in Figure 3), or flown.
  2. Power Connection: Connect the provided power cord to the AC inlet on the rear panel (Figure 4) and then to a grounded electrical outlet. Ensure the power switch is in the OFF position before connecting.
  3. Audio Input Connections:
    • Mic/Line Inputs (Channels 1 & 2): Use XLR or ¼-inch TRS/TS cables to connect microphones, mixers, or other audio sources to the combo inputs on the rear panel.
    • Aux Input: For connecting portable media players or smartphones, use a stereo 1/8-inch (3.5mm) cable.
  4. Output Connection (Optional): If linking multiple loudspeakers, connect the MIX OUT XLR output to the input of another active loudspeaker.
  5. Initial Power On: Once all connections are secure, turn on the power switch. The power indicator LED on the front will illuminate.

5. Operating Instructions

The AIR12 features intuitive controls for sound optimization. Refer to Figure 4 for control locations.

  1. Level Controls: Adjust the individual LEVEL knobs for Mic/Line 1 and Mic/Line 2 to set the input gain for each channel. Start with these at their minimum position and gradually increase.
  2. Master Volume: The MASTER VOL knob controls the overall output level of the loudspeaker.
  3. DSP Presets: The AIR12 includes several Digital Signal Processing (DSP) presets to optimize its sound for different applications. Use the dedicated controls to cycle through and select presets such as:
    • FOH (Front-of-House): Standard full-range operation for main PA.
    • Monitor: Optimized for use as a floor wedge.
    • Music: Enhanced for music playback.
    • Speech: Tailored for vocal clarity.
    • Sub: Engages a high-pass filter for use with a subwoofer.
  4. EQ Controls: Utilize the onboard EQ settings to fine-tune the frequency response to compensate for room acoustics or personal preference.
  5. Location Presets: Select presets that optimize performance based on the speaker's physical placement (e.g., stand-mounted, flown, or floor).
  6. Monitoring Audio: Play your audio source and adjust the LEVEL and MASTER VOL controls to achieve the desired volume without distortion. Observe the signal/clip indicators to prevent clipping.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your AIR12 loudspeaker.

  • Cleaning: Disconnect the power before cleaning. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the exterior of the loudspeaker. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, solvents, or waxes, as these can damage the finish.
  • Ventilation: Ensure that all ventilation openings remain clear of dust and debris to prevent overheating.
  • Storage: When not in use for extended periods, store the loudspeaker in a cool, dry environment, protected from extreme temperatures and humidity.
  • Inspection: Periodically check all cables and connections for signs of wear or damage. Replace any damaged cables immediately.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your PreSonus AIR12 loudspeaker, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • No Power:
    • Ensure the power cord is securely connected to both the loudspeaker and a working electrical outlet.
    • Check the power switch position.
    • Verify the outlet is supplying power by testing with another device.
  • No Sound:
    • Check that the input source is active and sending a signal.
    • Ensure all audio cables are correctly connected and not damaged.
    • Verify that the LEVEL controls for the input channels and the MASTER VOL knob are turned up.
    • Confirm that the correct input is selected if applicable (though AIR12 has dedicated inputs).
  • Distorted Sound:
    • Reduce the input LEVEL and MASTER VOL. If the signal/clip indicator is lighting up frequently, the input signal is too hot.
    • Check the audio source for distortion.
    • Ensure speaker cables are not damaged.
  • Hissing or Noise:
    • Disconnect all inputs. If the hiss persists, the noise may be internal to the speaker.
    • If the hiss disappears, reconnect inputs one by one to identify the noisy source.
    • Ensure proper grounding of all audio equipment to avoid ground loops. Try using a ground lift adapter if necessary, but only as a temporary diagnostic tool and with caution.
    • Lowering input gain and increasing master volume can sometimes reduce noise floor.
  • Overheating:
    • Ensure adequate airflow around the loudspeaker. Do not block ventilation ports.
    • Reduce the operating volume if the unit feels excessively hot.
  • If these steps do not resolve the issue, please contact PreSonus customer support for further assistance.
