3. Compatibility
The Corro-Protec Powered Anode Rod is designed for 40-89 gallon water heater tanks and is compatible with most water heater brands (except Bradford White for dedicated anode port installation, for which a specific model is available). It is safe for use with all water sources (city and well water), water treatment systems (including water softeners, filtration, reverse osmosis, etc.), and various water heater types.
- Water Heater Types: Electric, Gas, Solar, Hybrid, and Geothermal.
- Water Sources: City water, Well water.
- Water Treatment Systems: Water softeners, filtration systems, reverse osmosis systems.

4. Installation
Installation of the Corro-Protec Powered Anode Rod is designed to be straightforward. Comprehensive, easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions are included with the product. For most water heaters, installation involves replacing the existing hex head anode rod in a dedicated anode port. You will need 1" 1/16 and 1" 3/16 sockets for removal and installation.
Installation Steps:
- Prepare Water Heater: Turn off the power supply to your water heater (gas or electric). Close the cold water inlet valve.
- Drain Water (Optional but Recommended): Partially drain some water from the tank to reduce pressure and prevent spills during anode rod removal.
- Remove Old Anode Rod: Locate the dedicated anode port on top of your water heater. Use a 1" 1/16 socket to loosen and remove the old sacrificial anode rod. Be prepared for some residual water.
- Prepare New Anode Rod: Apply Teflon tape or appropriate sealant to the threads of the Corro-Protec anode rod.
- Insert Corro-Protec Anode Rod: Carefully screw the Corro-Protec anode rod into the dedicated anode port. Use a 1" 3/16 socket to tighten it securely.
- Connect Ground Wire: Attach the ground wire from the anode rod to a suitable grounding point on the water heater, typically one of the lid mounting screws.
- Connect Power Supply: Plug the 12-foot cord power supply into a standard 110V electrical outlet. A green light on the power supply indicates it is active.
- Restore Water and Power: Open the cold water inlet valve to refill the tank. Once the tank is full and all air is purged from hot water faucets, restore power to the water heater.

5. Operation
Once installed and powered, the Corro-Protec Powered Anode Rod begins its operation immediately. It works by creating a protective current that prevents the electrochemical reactions responsible for corrosion and sulfur smell in your water heater tank. Users typically report a significant reduction or complete elimination of rotten egg smell in hot water within 24 hours of installation.
The continuous operation of the anode rod also helps to reduce the buildup of sediment and limescale, contributing to improved water quality and the overall efficiency of your water heater.
6. Maintenance
One of the primary benefits of the Corro-Protec Powered Anode Rod is its low maintenance requirement. Unlike traditional sacrificial anode rods that need periodic inspection and replacement, the titanium construction and powered operation of the Corro-Protec rod make it virtually maintenance-free for its 20-year lifespan.
The only recommended maintenance is to periodically check the green indicator light on the power supply. A lit green light confirms that the unit is receiving power and operating correctly.
7. Troubleshooting
If you experience issues after installing your Corro-Protec Powered Anode Rod, consider the following:
- Persistent Sulfur Smell: While the product typically eliminates smell within 24 hours, some severe cases or specific water chemistries might require a bit longer. Ensure the power supply is active (green light is on). If the smell persists after a few days, ensure the anode rod is properly installed and making good contact with the water.
- No Green Light on Power Supply:
- Check if the power supply is securely plugged into a working electrical outlet.
- Verify that the electrical outlet has power (test with another device).
- Ensure the connection between the anode rod and its power supply cable is secure.
- Water Leakage from Anode Port: If you notice water leaking from the anode rod connection point, turn off the water supply and power to the water heater immediately. Re-tighten the anode rod, ensuring sufficient Teflon tape or sealant was applied to the threads during installation. If the leak persists, professional assistance may be required.
