4. Setup

Follow these steps to set up your ZYXEL GS-105B v3 switch:

  1. Placement: Place the switch on a stable, flat surface, such as a desktop. Ensure adequate ventilation around the device. The switch can also be mounted under a desk or on a wall using appropriate hardware (not included).

  3. Connect Power: Connect the provided power adapter to the "POWER 5V DC" port on the switch and then plug the adapter into a power outlet. The Power LED on the top panel should illuminate.
  4. Connect Devices: Connect your network devices (e.g., computer, router, network printer, game console) to any of the 5 Ethernet ports (1-5) on the switch using standard Ethernet cables.
  5. Verify Connection: Once a device is connected, the corresponding Link/Act LED for that port on the top panel will illuminate, indicating a successful connection.

The ZYXEL GS-105B v3 is an unmanaged switch and does not require any software configuration. It is ready for use immediately after physical connections are made.

5. Operating the Switch

5.1 LED Indicators

The top panel of the switch features LED indicators that provide status information:

  • Power LED (ⓘ):
    • Solid Green: The switch is powered on and operating normally.
    • Off: The switch is not receiving power.
  • Link/Act LEDs (① to ⑤ for Ports 1-5):
    • Solid Green: A valid network link is established at Gigabit speed (1000 Mbps).
    • Solid Amber: A valid network link is established at 10/100 Mbps speed.
    • Blinking Green/Amber: Data activity is occurring on the corresponding port.
    • Off: No network link is detected on the port.

5.2 Quality of Service (QoS)

The ZYXEL GS-105B v3 incorporates QoS features to prioritize network traffic:

  • Port 1 (HIGH): This port is designated for high-priority traffic. Connect devices that require consistent bandwidth and low latency, such as gaming consoles, VoIP phones, or devices used for video conferencing.
  • Ports 2-4 (MED PRIORITY): These ports are designated for medium-priority traffic. Connect devices where moderate priority is beneficial, such as general internet browsing or file transfers.
  • Port 5: This port operates at standard priority.

Utilizing the QoS ports can help ensure smoother performance for critical applications, even when the network is busy.
