2. Important Safety Information

Read and understand all safety warnings and instructions before installing or operating this fire pit burner. Failure to follow these instructions could result in fire, explosion, property damage, personal injury, or death.

  • Ensure proper clearance from combustible materials. Maintain a safe distance from walls, furniture, and other flammable objects.
  • Use only approved fuel types. This unit is designed for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Propane) only. Do not use natural gas or any other fuel.
  • Follow all installation and maintenance instructions. Incorrect installation or maintenance can be dangerous.
  • Keep the area well-ventilated. Never operate the fire pit in an enclosed space.
  • Do not store or use the fire pit indoors. This product is for outdoor use only.
  • Regularly check for gas leaks. Use a soapy water solution to check all gas connections for bubbles, indicating a leak.

4. Setup Instructions

4.1 Before You Begin

  • Ensure the fire pit area is clear of all combustible materials.
  • Confirm that your existing fire pit table is compatible with the dimensions of this burner (20"D x 20"W x 4"H).
  • Have appropriate tools ready (e.g., wrench for gas connections).
  • Ensure the propane tank is full and in good condition.

4.2 Installation Steps

  1. Prepare the Fire Pit: If replacing an old burner, ensure the gas supply is turned off at the source and disconnect the old burner. Carefully remove any existing fire media (lava rocks, glass) and the old burner unit.
  2. Place the New Burner: Carefully lower the Hiland DGH-BURNER replacement kit into the designated opening in your fire pit table. Ensure it sits securely and is level.
  3. Connect the Gas Line: Connect the provided gas regulator hose to your propane tank. Ensure all connections are hand-tight, then use a wrench to tighten them securely. Do not overtighten.
  4. Secure Propane Tank: Place the propane tank in its designated compartment within the fire pit table (if applicable). Ensure the compartment door can close properly.
  5. Perform a Leak Test: Before first use, or after any gas connection is made or disturbed, perform a leak test. Mix a solution of soapy water (50% soap, 50% water). With the propane tank valve open, apply the solution to all gas connections. If bubbles appear, there is a leak. Immediately turn off the gas, tighten the connection, and retest. Do not operate the fire pit if a leak is detected.
  6. Add Fire Media: Once the burner is securely installed and leak-tested, you may add fire media (e.g., fire glass, lava rocks) around the burner ring. Ensure the ignition element and burner holes are not obstructed.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Lighting the Burner

  1. Ensure the fire pit area is clear and safe.
  2. Open the valve on your propane tank.
  3. Turn the control knob on the fire pit burner to the 'ON' or 'LOW' position.
  4. Press and hold the ignition button. You should hear a clicking sound. Keep holding the button until the burner ignites.
  5. Once lit, continue to hold the ignition button for 10-15 seconds to allow the thermocouple to heat up and engage the safety valve. Release the button.
  6. If the burner does not light within 5 seconds, turn the control knob to 'OFF', wait 5 minutes for gas to dissipate, and repeat the lighting procedure. If the integrated ignition fails, use a long-stem lighter to ignite the burner while holding the control knob in the 'ON' position.
  7. Adjust the flame height using the control knob to your desired level.

5.2 Shutting Down the Burner

  1. Turn the control knob on the fire pit burner to the 'OFF' position.
  2. Close the valve on your propane tank.
  3. Allow the burner and fire media to cool completely before covering or storing.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your Hiland Fire Pit Burner.

  • Cleaning: Clean the burner and pan regularly with a soft cloth and mild soap. Avoid abrasive cleaners that could damage the stainless steel finish. Ensure all components are dry before use.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect the gas hose and connections for any signs of wear, cracks, or damage. Check the burner holes for obstructions (e.g., debris, insect nests).
  • Storage: When not in use for extended periods, especially during inclement weather, cover the fire pit or store the burner in a dry, protected area. Disconnect the propane tank and store it upright in a well-ventilated outdoor space.
  • Thermocouple: Ensure the thermocouple is clean and positioned correctly to sense the flame. A dirty or misaligned thermocouple can cause the flame to extinguish unexpectedly.
