2. Safety Information and Precautions

DANGER: ProtectaClear is a chemical product that requires careful handling. Please read and understand all safety warnings before use.

• HARMFUL OR FATAL IF SWALLOWED. In case of ingestion, seek immediate medical attention.
• KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. Store the product in a secure location inaccessible to children and pets.
• Avoid prolonged contact with skin. Wear appropriate protective gloves (e.g., nitrile or latex) when handling the product. In case of skin contact, wash thoroughly with soap and water.
• Avoid breathing vapor or spray mist. Use in a well-ventilated area or wear an approved respirator. If respiratory difficulty occurs, move to fresh air and call a physician.
• In case of eye contact, flush eyes immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contact lenses if present and easy to do. Seek medical attention promptly.

• Reports have associated repeated and prolonged occupational overexposure with damage to health. Intentional misuse by deliberately concentrating and inhaling the contents can be harmful or fatal.

3. Setup: Surface Preparation

Proper surface preparation is critical for the successful adhesion and longevity of the ProtectaClear coating. Follow these steps carefully:

1. Clean the Metal: Ensure the metal surface is thoroughly clean and free of dirt, grease, oil, wax, and any other contaminants. Use a suitable metal cleaner or degreaser.
2. Polish (Optional but Recommended): If you desire a polished look, polish the metal to your desired finish before applying ProtectaClear. The coating will seal in the current appearance.
3. Neutralize: After cleaning or polishing, it is essential to neutralize any acidic or alkaline residues. Rinse the metal thoroughly with clean water.
4. Dry Completely: The metal surface must be completely dry before application. Any moisture can compromise adhesion. Use a clean, lint-free cloth or allow to air dry.

ProtectaClear can be applied using various methods. Choose the method most suitable for your project:

Application Methods:

• Brush Application: Use a high-quality natural bristle brush. Apply a thin, even coat. ProtectaClear is self-leveling, so brush marks will typically disappear as it dries.
• Wipe Application: For smaller or intricate items, a lint-free cloth can be used to wipe on a thin coat. Ensure even coverage.
• Dip Application: For small items like jewelry, dipping can provide excellent, uniform coverage. Dip the item completely, then remove and allow excess to drip off.
• Spray Application: ProtectaClear can be sprayed using an airbrush or HVLP spray gun. Thinning may be required for optimal spray consistency. Consult the manufacturer's guidelines for specific thinning ratios.

Coating and Drying:

• Apply a single, thin coat initially. Allow the first coat to dry completely before applying additional coats. Drying time can vary based on temperature and humidity, but typically ranges from 30 minutes to 2 hours.
• For long-lasting protection, especially on high-use items or outdoor applications, two coats are recommended.
• Coverage: A 1 oz. can of ProtectaClear will cover approximately 4 to 5 square feet of metal with one coat. Adjust quantity based on project size and number of coats.
• The coating will be practically invisible once dry, allowing the natural beauty of the metal to show through without a thick or plastic appearance.

• Cleaning: Clean coated surfaces with mild soap and water using a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, harsh chemicals, or scrubbing pads, as these can damage the coating.
• Avoid Scratches: While durable, the coating can be scratched by sharp objects or excessive abrasion. Take care to prevent direct impact or scraping.
• Reapplication: If the coating shows signs of wear or damage over time, it can be reapplied. Ensure the surface is clean and dry before reapplication. ProtectaClear can be removed with Xylene if a complete stripping is necessary before reapplication.

• Poor Adhesion: This is most often due to inadequate surface preparation. Ensure the metal was thoroughly cleaned, neutralized, and completely dry before application. Residues (oils, waxes, polish compounds) will prevent proper bonding.
• Cloudy or Milky Appearance: This can occur if the coating is applied too thickly, or if there is moisture on the surface or in the air during application. Apply thinner coats and ensure the environment is dry. High humidity can also cause this.
• Bubbles or Pinholes: Bubbles can form if the product is shaken excessively before use, or if applied too quickly. Allow the product to sit for a few minutes after shaking to let bubbles dissipate. Apply with smooth, even strokes.
• Uneven Finish/Brush Marks: While ProtectaClear is self-leveling, very thick coats or rapid drying can sometimes leave marks. Apply thin, even coats. If necessary, a light sanding with very fine grit sandpaper (e.g., 2000 grit) followed by another thin coat can correct this.
