4. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps to properly install your SBU Boat Cover:

  1. Prepare the Boat: Ensure your boat is clean and free of sharp objects that could snag or tear the cover. Lower any antennas, bimini tops, or other accessories that might interfere with the cover's fit.
  2. Unfold the Cover: Carefully unfold the boat cover and identify the front (bow) and rear (stern) sections. The cover is typically designed with a specific shape to match your boat's contours.
  3. Position the Cover: Start by placing the bow end of the cover over the front of your boat. Gradually pull the cover over the entire boat, working your way towards the stern.
  4. Secure the Hem: The elastic cord in the hem around the bottom of the cover will help secure it. Ensure the hem is pulled down evenly around the entire perimeter of the boat.
  5. Attach Straps: Utilize the integrated buckle and strap system. Thread the tie-down straps through the buckles and secure them tightly under the hull or to the trailer frame. Ensure straps are taut to prevent wind from lifting the cover.
  6. Check for Fit: Verify that the cover is snug and evenly distributed. Adjust straps as necessary to eliminate loose areas or excessive flapping.

Important Considerations:

  • If your boat has a wakeboard tower, bow rails over 6 inches in height, or an extended swim platform, please confirm compatibility or consult with the manufacturer to ensure proper fit.
  • O/B Motor Hoods are sold separately and are not included with this boat cover.
  • For optimal protection and to prolong the life of your boat cover, the use of a support pole and sandbag mooring kit is highly recommended. These items are sold separately. Support poles help prevent water pooling and excessive stress on the cover fabric.

5. Usage and Operation

The SBU Boat Cover is designed for various applications:

5.1. Trailering

When trailering your boat, ensure the cover is securely fastened using all provided tie-down straps. The integrated buckle and strap system is designed to withstand generally accepted safe trailering speeds. Regularly check strap tension during long trips.

5.2. Storage

For long-term storage, whether on a trailer, dock, or boat lift, ensure the cover is installed correctly and taut. The air vents will help prevent moisture buildup and mildew. If storing outdoors, consider using a support pole to create a peak, allowing water and debris to run off.

5.3. Mooring

When mooring, ensure the cover is securely attached to prevent it from being dislodged by wind or water movement. The elastic hem provides a snug fit, but additional securing points may be necessary depending on environmental conditions.

6. Maintenance

Proper maintenance will extend the life and effectiveness of your boat cover:

  • Cleaning: Clean the cover regularly with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive brushes, which can damage the urethane coating. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry completely before folding or storing.
  • Drying: Always ensure the cover is completely dry before folding and storing it in the provided storage bag. Storing a damp cover can lead to mildew and degradation of the fabric.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect the cover for any signs of wear, tears, or damage to the straps and buckles. Address minor issues promptly to prevent further damage.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the clean, dry cover in its storage bag in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

7. Troubleshooting

  • Water Pooling: If water collects on the cover, it indicates insufficient tension or lack of support. Ensure straps are tight and consider using a support pole (sold separately) to create a higher peak, allowing water to run off.
  • Cover Flapping in Wind: This suggests the cover is not sufficiently taut. Re-adjust all straps to ensure a snug fit around the boat. Check that the elastic hem is fully engaged.
  • Mildew Growth: Mildew typically occurs when the cover is stored damp or if there is insufficient air circulation. Ensure the cover is completely dry before storage and that air vents are clear when in use. Clean mildew with a specialized fabric cleaner designed for marine use.
