  • IR Sensor: Detects infrared radiation to measure temperature.
  • Laser Pointer Beam: Helps to aim at the target measurement area.
  • LCD Display: Shows temperature readings and settings.
  • Function Buttons: Used to change units (℃/℉), toggle laser, and adjust emissivity.
  • Measurement Trigger: Press and hold to take a temperature reading.
  • Battery Cover: Located at the base of the handle for battery access.

4. Setup

4.1 Battery Installation

  1. Open the battery cover located at the bottom of the handle.
  2. Insert one 9V battery, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  3. Close the battery cover securely.

4.2 Power On/Off

The device powers on automatically when the Measurement Trigger is pressed. It will automatically power off after approximately 7 seconds of inactivity to conserve battery life.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Taking a Measurement

  1. Point the thermometer at the target object.
  2. Press and hold the Measurement Trigger. The laser pointer will activate (if enabled) to indicate the measurement spot.
  3. The temperature reading will appear on the LCD display instantly.

5.2 Unit Selection (℃/℉)

With the device powered on, press the ℃/℉ button (often labeled with a sun icon or ℃/℉ symbol) to switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit temperature units.

5.3 Laser Pointer Toggle

Press the laser button (often labeled with a laser icon) to turn the laser pointer on or off. The laser helps in precise targeting but is not necessary for measurement.

5.4 Distance to Spot Ratio (D:S)

The MS-M816 has a Distance to Spot (D:S) ratio of 12:1. This means that at a distance of 12 inches from the target, the measurement spot diameter will be 1 inch. To ensure accurate readings, make sure the target area is larger than the spot size.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning

  • Wipe the device clean with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Keep the IR sensor lens clean to ensure accurate readings. Use a soft cloth or cotton swab with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol if necessary.

6.2 Battery Replacement

When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace the 9V battery as described in Section 4.1.

6.3 Storage

Store the thermometer in a cool, dry place when not in use. Remove the battery if storing for extended periods to prevent leakage.

7. Troubleshooting

  • No Display: Check battery installation and ensure the battery has sufficient charge. Replace if necessary.
  • Inaccurate Readings: Ensure the IR sensor lens is clean. Verify the D:S ratio is appropriate for your measurement distance and target size. Check for obstructions between the thermometer and the target.
  • Laser Not Working: Check if the laser function is enabled via the laser button.
  • "HI" or "LO" on Display: Indicates the measured temperature is outside the device's specified range.
