5. Setup

5.1 Hard Drive Installation

  1. Ensure the NASBOX is powered off and disconnected from the power source.
  2. Gently pull the handle of an empty drive tray to slide it out of the bay.
  3. Place a 3.5-inch SATA hard drive into the tray, aligning the screw holes.
  4. Secure the hard drive to the tray using the provided screws.
  5. Slide the populated drive tray back into the NASBOX until it clicks into place.
  6. Repeat for all desired hard drives.

5.2 Network Connection

  1. Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to a LAN port on the NASBOX.
  2. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to your router or network switch.

5.3 Power On

  1. Connect the power adapter to the NASBOX power input.
  2. Plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet.
  3. Press the Power button on the front panel. The system will begin to boot up.

5.4 Initial Configuration

Once powered on, the NASBOX will acquire an IP address from your network's DHCP server. You can find this IP address on the front LCD display. Access the NASBOX's web-based management interface by entering this IP address into a web browser on a computer connected to the same network. Follow the on-screen instructions for initial setup, including creating RAID volumes and user accounts.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Accessing the NAS

The NASBOX can be accessed via its web interface for administration or through network shares (SMB/CIFS, NFS, FTP) from client devices. Refer to your operating system's documentation for connecting to network shares.

6.2 RAID Configuration

The NASBOX supports various RAID levels including RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, and JBOD. Configure your desired RAID level through the web management interface. Choose a RAID level that balances performance, capacity, and data redundancy according to your needs.

  • RAID 0: Striping for maximum performance and capacity, no redundancy.
  • RAID 1: Mirroring for data redundancy, uses half the total capacity.
  • RAID 5: Striping with parity for good performance and redundancy, requires at least 3 drives.
  • RAID 6: Striping with dual parity for enhanced redundancy, requires at least 4 drives.
  • RAID 10 (1+0): Striping and mirroring for high performance and redundancy, requires at least 4 drives.
  • JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks): Combines drives into a single logical volume without redundancy.

6.3 File Sharing and User Management

Create shared folders and manage user access permissions through the web interface. Assign specific users or groups access to different folders to control data security.

6.4 Data Backup

Regularly back up critical data from your NAS to another storage device or cloud service. While RAID provides redundancy against drive failure, it is not a substitute for a comprehensive backup strategy.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Regular Checks

  • Monitor the health of your hard drives and RAID volumes through the web interface.
  • Check system logs for any warnings or errors.
  • Ensure proper ventilation and clear any dust accumulation around the fan and vents.

7.2 Firmware Updates

Periodically check the Terra support website for firmware updates. Firmware updates can provide new features, performance improvements, and security enhancements. Follow the instructions provided with the firmware update carefully.

7.3 Cleaning

Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the NASBOX. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosols. For internal cleaning, use compressed air to remove dust from fans and vents, ensuring the device is powered off and unplugged.

8. Troubleshooting

8.1 No Power

  • Ensure the power cable is securely connected to both the NASBOX and the power outlet.
  • Verify the power outlet is functional.
  • Check the power adapter for any damage.

8.2 Network Connectivity Issues

  • Check that the Ethernet cable is properly connected to both the NASBOX and the router/switch.
  • Verify that the network status LEDs on the NASBOX are active.
  • Ensure your router is functioning correctly.
  • Try restarting the NASBOX and your router.

8.3 Drive Failure

If a hard drive fails, the NASBOX will typically indicate this via an LED indicator and/or an alert in the web interface. If using a redundant RAID level (e.g., RAID 1, 5, 6, 10), replace the failed drive with a new, identical or larger capacity drive. The system will then automatically begin rebuilding the RAID volume.

8.4 Forgotten Password

If you forget the administrator password, refer to the device's reset procedure, which typically involves a physical reset button. Be aware that a factory reset may erase all data and configurations.
