Setup

1. Battery Installation

The clock requires 2 'C' batteries for operation. For extended battery life, up to 4 'C' batteries can be installed.

  1. Remove the battery compartment cover on the back of the clock.
  2. Insert 2 to 4 new 'C' batteries according to the polarity markings (+ and -) inside the compartment.
  3. Replace the battery compartment cover securely.

2. Initial Time Synchronization

After battery installation, the clock will automatically attempt to receive the WWVB atomic time signal from Fort Collins, Colorado. This process may take several minutes to several hours, depending on your location and environmental conditions.

  • Place the clock in an area with good reception, ideally near a window and away from electronic devices that may cause interference.
  • The clock features dual antennas for enhanced reception, allowing it to synchronize in challenging environments.
  • The second hand will typically move to the 12 o'clock position and pause while searching for the signal. Once the signal is received, the clock will set itself to the correct time.

3. Setting Time Zone and DST

The clock has switches on the back to select your time zone and enable/disable Daylight Saving Time (DST) adjustment.

  • Set the time zone switch to your local time zone (e.g., PST, MST, CST, EST).
  • Set the DST switch to ON for automatic Daylight Saving Time adjustments, or OFF if your region does not observe DST.

Operating Instructions

Automatic Time Adjustment

The UltrAtomic clock automatically adjusts to the current time and updates for Daylight Saving Time twice a year, ensuring accurate timekeeping without manual intervention.

Q-Mode (Quartz Mode)

If atomic signal reception is consistently poor or unavailable, you can switch the clock to Q-Mode for manual time setting. Refer to the back of the clock for the Q-Mode switch and instructions on how to manually set the time.

Battery Saving Option

The clock features a battery-saving option that pauses the second hand overnight (typically from 11 PM to 5 AM) to extend battery life. The minute and hour hands continue to advance normally during this period. This feature can significantly prolong the time before battery replacement is needed.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the clock with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or chemicals that may damage the finish or glass.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace all batteries at the same time when they are low. The clock has a low power detection indicator.
  • Storage: If storing the clock for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.

Troubleshooting

ProblemSolution
Clock does not set to correct time.Ensure batteries are fresh and correctly installed. Verify time zone and DST settings. Place the clock near a window, away from electronic interference. Allow up to 24 hours for initial synchronization.
Second hand stops or moves erratically.Replace all batteries with new 'C' batteries. Check for any obstructions to the hands. If in battery-saving mode, the second hand will pause overnight.
Clock makes a clicking sound. This is normal operation for the movement, especially when the minute and hour hands advance every 15 seconds. It is not indicative of a malfunction.
Time is incorrect after DST change.Ensure the DST switch on the back of the clock is set to ON. The clock should automatically adjust within 24 hours of the DST change.
