Hughes & Kettner TubeMeister Deluxe 20 Tube Head User Manual
Model: TM20DH
Introduction
Welcome to the instruction manual for your Hughes & Kettner TubeMeister Deluxe 20 Tube Head. This amplifier is designed to provide versatile tube tone for various applications, from studio recording to live performance. Please read this manual thoroughly to understand the features and ensure safe and optimal operation of your amplifier.
Setup
1. Unpacking
Carefully remove the amplifier from its packaging. Retain all packaging materials for future transport or storage.
2. Power Connection
- Ensure the amplifier's power switch is in the OFF position.
- Connect the supplied power cord to the amplifier's AC inlet and then to a grounded power outlet.
3. Speaker Cabinet Connection
Connect the amplifier to a suitable speaker cabinet using a high-quality speaker cable. Ensure the impedance of the speaker cabinet matches the amplifier's output impedance setting. Incorrect impedance matching can damage the amplifier.
4. Instrument and Effects Connections
- Connect your guitar to the INPUT jack on the front panel.
- For external effects, use the serial effects loop (SEND and RETURN jacks on the rear panel). Connect the SEND to your effect unit's input and the effect unit's output to the RETURN.
- The RED BOX DI output allows direct connection to a mixing console or recording interface.
Operating Instructions

Figure 1: Front panel of the TubeMeister Deluxe 20 amplifier. This image displays the input jack, gain and master controls for both clean and lead channels, a three-band EQ (Treble, Mid, Bass), power and standby switches, and the illuminated tube section.
1. Powering On
- Flip the POWER switch to the ON position. The tubes will begin to warm up.
- Wait approximately 30-60 seconds, then flip the STANDBY switch to the PLAY position. The amplifier is now ready for use.
2. Channel Controls
The TubeMeister Deluxe 20 features two channels: Clean and Lead.
- CLEAN Channel: Use the GAIN and MASTER controls for the clean channel to adjust its input sensitivity and overall volume.
- LEAD Channel: Activate the lead channel using the dedicated switch. Adjust its GAIN and MASTER controls for desired overdrive and volume. The BOOST switch provides additional gain for higher distortion levels.
3. Equalization (EQ)
The shared EQ section allows you to shape the tone for both channels:
- TREBLE: Adjusts the high-frequency response.
- MID: Adjusts the mid-range frequency response.
- BASS: Adjusts the low-frequency response.
4. Power Soak
The integrated Power Soak allows you to select the output wattage, making the amplifier suitable for various environments:
- 20 Watts: Full power for live performances or loud rehearsals.
- 5 Watts: Reduced power for smaller venues or practice.
- 1 Watt: Low power for quiet practice or recording at lower volumes.
- Speaker-Off: Engages the internal load for silent recording via the Red Box DI, protecting the amplifier without a speaker connected.
5. Red Box DI Output
The built-in Red Box DI provides a speaker-simulated output for direct connection to a mixing board or recording device. This eliminates the need for a microphone and offers a consistent tone.
Maintenance
1. Tube Replacement
Vacuum tubes have a finite lifespan and will eventually need replacement. If you notice a decrease in tone quality, volume, or unusual noise, it may be time to replace the tubes. It is recommended to have tube replacement performed by a qualified technician.
2. Cleaning
Clean the amplifier's exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the finish. Ensure the amplifier is unplugged before cleaning.
3. Storage
When not in use for extended periods, store the amplifier in a dry, temperature-controlled environment. Use the original packaging for protection during storage or transport.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No sound | Power not connected, Standby switch in OFF position, faulty speaker cable, incorrect impedance. | Check power and speaker connections. Ensure Standby is in PLAY. Verify speaker impedance. |
| Weak or distorted sound | Worn tubes, incorrect gain settings, faulty instrument cable. | Check gain and master settings. Test with a different instrument cable. Consider tube replacement. |
| Excessive hum or noise | Ground loop, faulty tubes, proximity to interference sources. | Ensure proper grounding. Move away from electronic devices. Consult a technician for tube inspection. |
If problems persist, contact qualified service personnel.
