1. Introduction
The BESTDO SM852B is a compact and efficient instrument designed to accurately measure the phase sequence and open phase conditions in three-phase AC circuits. It utilizes LED indicators and an audible buzzer to provide clear and immediate feedback. This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective use of your SM852B tester.
2. Safety Information
WARNING: Failure to follow these safety instructions may result in electric shock, fire, or serious injury.
- Do not expose the instrument to water or other corrosive liquids.
- Avoid placing the device in direct sunlight or environments with high temperatures and humidity, as this can affect its performance and lifespan.
- Ensure the operational voltage is within the specified range of 60V to 600V AC (3 Phase).
- Observe the continuous use time limits: 60 minutes maximum at 60V AC and 4 minutes maximum at 600V AC. Exceeding these limits can damage the device.
- This device is not a voltage detector. One phase can be live even if all orange LEDs are off during an open phase check. Always verify voltage with a dedicated voltage detector before touching any conductors.
- Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when working with electrical systems.
- Do not attempt to open or repair the device. Refer all servicing to qualified personnel.
3. Product Overview
The SM852B Phase Sequence Rotation Tester consists of the main unit and three test leads with alligator clips. The main unit features LED indicators for phase presence and rotation, along with a buzzer for audible alerts.

Figure 3.1: Front view of the BESTDO SM852B tester, showing the main unit with its LED indicators for U, V, W phases, CCW (Counter-Clockwise) and CW (Clockwise) rotation, and the attached red, yellow, and green test leads with their respective alligator clips.
3.1 Components
- Main Unit: Houses the circuitry, LED indicators, and buzzer.
- Test Leads: Three color-coded leads (red, yellow, green) for connecting to the three phases.
- Alligator Clips: Detachable clips for secure connection to terminals.
3.2 Indicator Functions

Figure 3.2: Back view of the SM852B tester, displaying key operational specifications and a table detailing LED and buzzer indications for open phase and phase sequence checks.
The back of the unit provides a quick reference for LED and buzzer indications:
| Condition | Phase Check LEDs | Phase Sequence Check LEDs | Buzzer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open Phase | All 3 orange LEDs are lit. | Green LED is lit. | Intermittent beep. |
| Reverse Phase (CCW) | All 3 orange LEDs are lit. | Red LED is lit. | Continuous beep. |
| Open Phase (one phase only) | Orange LED for open phase is off. | Both green and red LEDs are off. | Continuous beep. |
4. Setup
Before using the SM852B tester, ensure all components are present and in good condition.
- Inspect Components: Verify that the main unit, test leads, and alligator clips are free from damage. Do not use if any part is damaged.
- Attach Alligator Clips: Securely attach the red, yellow, and green alligator clips to their corresponding test leads. Ensure a firm connection.

5. Operating Instructions
Follow these steps to use the SM852B tester for phase sequence and open phase detection.
- Connect Test Leads: Connect the red, yellow, and green test leads to the corresponding phases (L1/U, L2/V, L3/W) of the three-phase AC circuit you wish to test. Ensure secure connections using the alligator clips.
- Observe Phase Check LEDs: All three orange LEDs (U, V, W) on the main unit should illuminate if all phases are present and within the operational voltage range. If any orange LED is off, it indicates an open phase condition.
- Determine Phase Sequence:
- If the Green LED (CW) illuminates and the buzzer emits an intermittent beep, the phase sequence is correct (clockwise rotation).
- If the Red LED (CCW) illuminates and the buzzer emits a continuous beep, the phase sequence is reversed (counter-clockwise rotation).
- Identify Open Phase:
- If one of the orange phase LEDs (U, V, or W) is off, it indicates an open phase. In this scenario, both the green and red sequence LEDs will be off, and the buzzer will emit a continuous beep.
- Disconnect: After testing, carefully disconnect the test leads from the circuit, starting with the highest voltage point.
Note: The device operates without internal batteries, drawing power directly from the tested circuit. Always ensure the circuit is live within the specified voltage range for the tester to function.
6. Maintenance
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of your SM852B tester.
- Cleaning: Wipe the device with a dry, soft cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: Store the tester in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, high temperatures, and corrosive environments.
- Inspection: Regularly inspect the test leads and alligator clips for any signs of wear, cuts, or damage. Replace damaged components immediately.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your SM852B tester, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No LEDs light up, no buzzer sound. |
|
|
| One or more orange phase LEDs are off, continuous beep. |
|
|
| Red LED (CCW) lights up, continuous beep. | Reversed phase sequence. | This indicates a counter-clockwise phase rotation. Adjust the phase connections as required for clockwise rotation. |
