Introduction

The NETGEAR Powerline 1000 Mbps WiFi Essentials Edition (PLW1010-100NAS) extends your existing WiFi network using your home's electrical wiring. This system provides up to 1 Gbps speeds with Homeplug AV2 technology, making it suitable for connecting smart TVs, streaming players, and game consoles for HD video streaming and lag-free gaming. It offers both wired and wireless connectivity to hard-to-reach locations within your home.

Installation Steps

1. Connect the PL1010 Adapter: Plug the PowerLINE 1000 Essentials Edition Adapter (PL1010) directly into an electrical outlet near your internet router. Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to the PL1010 adapter and the other end to an available LAN port on your router.
2. Connect the PLW1010 WiFi Access Point: Plug the PowerLINE WiFi 1000 Essentials Edition Access Point (PLW1010) directly into an electrical outlet in the room where you need to extend your internet access. Ensure it is not plugged into a power strip, surge protector, or extension cord, as this can degrade performance.
3. Pair the Devices: Wait for the Powerline LED on both devices to turn solid green. If they do not, press the Security button on the PL1010 adapter for two seconds, then within two minutes, press the Security button on the PLW1010 access point for two seconds. The Powerline LEDs should turn solid green, indicating a secure connection.
4. Connect to WiFi: On your wireless device (laptop, smartphone, tablet), search for available WiFi networks. The PLW1010 will broadcast a new WiFi network (SSID) with a default name and password printed on the device's label. Connect to this network using the provided credentials.
5. Optional: Customize WiFi Settings: For advanced configuration, such as changing the WiFi network name (SSID) or password, connect a computer to the PLW1010 via Ethernet or its default WiFi network. Open a web browser and navigate to mywifiext.net or the device's IP address. Follow the on-screen instructions to log in and modify settings.

Understanding Indicator Lights

The Powerline devices feature LED indicators that provide status information:

• Power LED: Indicates if the device is powered on.
• Powerline LED: Indicates the status of the Powerline connection. A solid green light typically means a good connection. An amber light may indicate a fair connection, and a red light a poor connection. If off, there is no Powerline connection.
• Ethernet LED: Indicates an active Ethernet connection to a device.
• WiFi LED (PLW1010 only): Indicates the status of the WiFi network.

Connecting Devices

Once the Powerline network is established, you can connect devices:

• Wired Devices: Use an Ethernet cable to connect devices like smart TVs, game consoles, or desktop computers to the Ethernet port on the PLW1010 access point.
• Wireless Devices: Connect your smartphones, tablets, and laptops to the WiFi network broadcast by the PLW1010. Use the SSID and password configured during setup.

Maintenance

To ensure optimal performance and longevity of your NETGEAR Powerline devices:

• Placement: Ensure the devices are plugged directly into wall outlets and not into power strips, surge protectors, or extension cords. These can interfere with the Powerline signal.
• Ventilation: Keep the devices in well-ventilated areas. Avoid covering them or placing them in enclosed spaces to prevent overheating.
• Cleaning: Periodically clean the exterior of the devices with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners.
• Firmware Updates: Check the NETGEAR support website periodically for firmware updates. Keeping your device's firmware up-to-date can improve performance and security.

Troubleshooting

No Powerline Connection

• Check Power: Ensure both Powerline adapters are plugged into live electrical outlets.
• Same Electrical Circuit: Powerline devices work best when on the same electrical circuit. If they are on different circuits, the signal might be weak or non-existent.
• Avoid Power Strips: Do not plug Powerline adapters into power strips, surge protectors, or extension cords. Plug them directly into a wall outlet.
• Re-pair Devices: If the Powerline LED is off or red, try re-pairing the devices using the Security buttons as described in the setup section.

Weak or Intermittent WiFi Signal

• Relocate PLW1010: Try plugging the PLW1010 into a different electrical outlet to find a location with a stronger Powerline signal (indicated by a green Powerline LED).
• Interference: Certain household appliances (e.g., microwaves, refrigerators) can cause interference. Try moving the PLW1010 away from such devices.
• Check Router Signal: Ensure your main router's WiFi signal is strong enough where the PL1010 is connected.

Cannot Connect to WiFi Network

• Verify SSID and Password: Double-check that you are entering the correct WiFi network name (SSID) and password. These are typically found on the device label or in your customized settings.
• WPS Button: If your device supports WPS, press the WPS button on the PLW1010 and then activate WPS on your wireless device within two minutes.
• Restart Devices: Power cycle both the PL1010 and PLW1010 by unplugging them from the wall for 10 seconds and then plugging them back in.
