Setup and First Use

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove all packaging materials and labels from the Dutch oven.
  2. Initial Cleaning: Before first use, wash the Dutch oven and lid with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely.
  3. Conditioning: While not strictly necessary for enameled cast iron, some users prefer to lightly rub a small amount of cooking oil on the rim of the pot and lid to help prevent rust on exposed cast iron edges. Wipe off any excess oil.

Operating Instructions

Heat Sources

  • The Dutch oven is suitable for use on gas, electric, ceramic, and induction stovetops.
  • It is oven-safe up to 450°F (232°C).
  • Always use a heat-resistant trivet or pot holder when placing the hot Dutch oven on surfaces.

Cooking Guidelines

  • Preheating: Always preheat the Dutch oven gradually over low to medium heat. Avoid high heat, especially when empty, as this can damage the enamel.
  • Cooking Temperature: Enameled cast iron retains and distributes heat efficiently. Most cooking tasks can be performed on low to medium heat. High heat should only be used for boiling liquids or reducing sauces.
  • Utensils: Use wooden, silicone, or heat-resistant plastic utensils to avoid scratching the enamel surface. Metal utensils may scratch or chip the enamel.
  • Lid Function: The lid features self-basting condensation ridges, which help to circulate moisture and flavor back into your food during cooking.

Care and Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Hand-washing is recommended to preserve the original finish. Allow the Dutch oven to cool completely before washing. Do not immerse a hot pan in cold water, as this can cause thermal shock and damage the enamel. Use warm, soapy water and a non-abrasive sponge or cloth. For stubborn food residues, soak the cookware in hot, soapy water before cleaning.
  • Drying and Storage: Dry the Dutch oven thoroughly immediately after washing to prevent rust on any exposed cast iron edges. Store in a dry, airy space. Avoid stacking or nesting other cookware directly inside without protection, as this can scratch or chip the enamel.
  • Avoiding Damage: Enameled cast iron is durable but can chip or crack if dropped or knocked against hard surfaces. Avoid sudden temperature changes. Do not use metallic pads or harsh abrasive chemicals, as these will damage the enamel.
  • Lid Knob Maintenance: Over time, the screw attaching the lid knob may loosen. Retighten it carefully, ensuring not to overtighten, which could damage the lid. If the knob cannot be retightened, contact customer service. Do not use a lid with a loose knob for safety.

Troubleshooting

  • Stuck Food: If food is stuck to the enamel, do not scrape with metal utensils. Instead, fill the Dutch oven with warm, soapy water and let it soak for several hours or overnight. Then, gently scrub with a non-abrasive sponge.
  • Discoloration: Over time, the interior enamel may show some discoloration, especially with certain foods. This is normal and does not affect the performance or safety of the cookware. For minor stains, a paste of baking soda and water can be used gently.
  • Loose Lid Knob: Refer to the "Lid Knob Maintenance" section under Care and Maintenance.
  • Chipping/Cracking: If the enamel chips or cracks, discontinue use if the exposed cast iron is extensive or if it affects cooking performance. Contact customer service for guidance.
