2.2 Balancing the Stabilizer

Proper balancing is crucial for smooth operation. The SK-SW PRO2 features adjustable counterweights and an extendable carbon fiber pole to achieve perfect balance.

  1. Adjusting Counterweights: The base of the stabilizer includes four removable polished chrome counterweights. These can be unscrewed and moved along the base plate to fine-tune the balance. Add or remove weights as needed for your camera's mass.
  2. Adjusting Pole Length: The carbon fiber pole is length-adjustable from 17.7 to 28.5 inches (45-72.5 cm). Loosen the locking mechanism on the pole, extend or retract the pole to adjust the center of gravity, and then tighten the lock. The pole has centimeter markings for repeatable adjustments.
  3. Fine-tuning Top Plate: The top plate allows for precise forward/backward and left/right adjustments. Use the geared adjustment knobs to slide the camera platform until the stabilizer is perfectly level and balanced.

3. Operating the Stabilizer

Once balanced, the SK-SW PRO2 allows for fluid camera movements. Hold the foam-padded handle firmly but gently, allowing the gimbal to isolate camera movements from your hand. Practice walking and moving with the stabilizer to achieve the desired smooth, cinematic shots.

  • Hold the handle with one hand, keeping your arm slightly bent to act as a shock absorber.
  • Use your other hand to gently guide the camera or to make minor adjustments to its direction. Avoid gripping the camera directly, as this will transfer unwanted movements.
  • Walk smoothly, bending your knees slightly to further absorb shocks and maintain a consistent height.

4. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Sevenoak SK-SW PRO2 stabilizer.

  • Cleaning: Wipe down the carbon fiber pole and metal components with a soft, dry cloth after each use. If necessary, use a slightly damp cloth with mild soap, then dry thoroughly. Avoid harsh chemicals.
  • Gimbal Care: Keep the 3-axis gimbal clean and free of dust and debris. Do not lubricate the gimbal bearings unless specifically instructed by the manufacturer, as this can attract dirt and hinder performance.
  • Check Connections: Periodically check all screws, knobs, and connections to ensure they are tight and secure. Loose components can affect stability and potentially damage your equipment.
  • Storage: Store the stabilizer in a clean, dry place, preferably in its original packaging or a protective case, to prevent dust accumulation and physical damage.

5. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your SK-SW PRO2, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Stabilizer is wobbly or unstable.Improper balance.Re-balance the stabilizer by adjusting counterweights and pole length. Ensure the camera is centered on the quick release plate. Refer to Section 2.2.
Camera drifts to one side.Horizontal imbalance.Use the fine adjustment knobs on the top plate to shift the camera left or right until balanced. Refer to Section 2.2.
Camera tilts forward or backward.Front-to-back imbalance.Use the fine adjustment knobs on the top plate to shift the camera forward or backward until balanced. Refer to Section 2.2.
Foam handle slides off.Loose fit or wear.Re-secure the foam handle. If it continues to slide, consider a small amount of adhesive or tape to secure it in place.
