Setup

1. Battery Installation and Charging

The GXT1000VP4 radios come with rechargeable battery packs. For initial use, fully charge the battery packs. Charging typically takes up to 12 hours and provides up to 11 hours of battery life on a full charge.

  1. Open the battery cover on the back of the radio.
  2. Insert the rechargeable battery pack, ensuring correct polarity.
  3. Close the battery cover securely to maintain the waterproof seal.
  4. Place the radio into the dual desktop charger.
  5. Connect the AC adapter to the charger and a standard wall outlet.
  6. The charging indicator light on the charger will illuminate.
  7. Alternatively, the radios can operate using 4 "AA" alkaline batteries (not included).

2. Attaching the Belt Clip

To attach the belt clip, slide the clip into the slot on the back of the radio until it clicks into place. To remove, lift the tab on the belt clip and slide it off.

3. Headset Connection

Connect the boom mic headset to the external speaker/mic jack located on the side of the radio. Ensure the connection is firm.

Operating Instructions

1. Power On/Off and Volume

To turn the radio on or off, rotate the Power/Volume knob clockwise or counter-clockwise. Continue rotating to adjust the volume level.

2. Channel Selection

The GXT1000VP4 features 50 GMRS channels. To change channels:

  1. Press the MENU/WX button once. The channel number will flash.
  2. Use the UP or DOWN arrow buttons to select your desired channel.
  3. Press the PTT button or MENU/WX button to confirm your selection.

3. Privacy Codes (CTCSS/DCS)

The radio offers 142 privacy codes (CTCSS/DCS) to minimize interference from other users on the same channel, providing up to 3,124 channel options.

  1. Press the MENU/WX button twice to enter the privacy code setting. The current privacy code will flash.
  2. Use the UP or DOWN arrow buttons to select a privacy code.
  3. Press the PTT button or MENU/WX button to confirm.

4. Transmitting and Receiving (PTT)

To transmit, press and hold the PTT (Push-To-Talk) button on the side of the radio. Speak clearly into the microphone. Release the PTT button to receive.

5. VOX/eVOX (Hands-Free Operation)

The eVOX feature allows for hands-free operation with 9 sensitivity levels. When eVOX is enabled, the radio transmits automatically when you speak.

  1. Press the MENU/WX button until the VOX icon flashes.
  2. Use the UP or DOWN arrow buttons to select the desired sensitivity level (1-9, with 9 being most sensitive). Select 'OFF' to disable VOX.
  3. Press the PTT button or MENU/WX button to confirm.

6. Call Alert

The radio includes 10 selectable Call Alerts. To send a Call Alert tone, briefly press the CALL button.

7. SOS Siren

In emergency situations, press the SOS button to activate an audible distress signal.

8. NOAA Weather Scan + Alert

The NOAA Weather Scan feature automatically scans through 10 available weather band channels to find the nearest NOAA broadcast. The NOAA Weather Alert feature sounds an alarm when severe weather is detected in your area.

  1. To activate Weather Scan, press and hold the MENU/WX button until the weather channel appears.
  2. To enable Weather Alert, navigate to the Weather Alert setting in the menu and select 'ON'.

9. Key Lock

To prevent accidental changes to your settings, press and hold the CALL/LOCK button until the Key Lock icon appears on the display. Repeat to unlock.

10. Whisper Feature

The whisper feature allows you to communicate quietly without disturbing others. Consult the full owner's manual for activation steps.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning

Clean the radio with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure the battery compartment and all ports are dry before closing to maintain waterproof integrity.

2. Battery Care

To maximize battery life, avoid overcharging and fully discharge the battery periodically before recharging. If using alkaline batteries, remove them if the radio will not be used for an extended period.

3. Storage

Store the radios in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
