1. Overview

The ASUS Steam Link (Model V000694-XX) is a device designed to extend your PC gaming experience to any television in your home. By connecting to your home network, the Steam Link streams content from your gaming PC, allowing you to play your favorite Steam games from the comfort of your living room couch. It operates using SteamOS, a Linux-based operating system optimized for gaming.

The device is typically bundled with a Steam Controller, offering a unique input method for a wide range of games. It supports both wired and wireless network connections for flexible placement within your home.

2. Setup

2.1. Package Contents

Before beginning, ensure all components are present:

• ASUS Steam Link device
• Steam Controller
• Power Adapter
• HDMI Cable
• Ethernet Cable
• AA Batteries for Steam Controller

2.2. Connecting the Steam Link

1. Connect the Steam Link to your television using the provided HDMI cable.
2. Connect the power adapter to the Steam Link and then to a power outlet.
3. For optimal performance, connect the Steam Link to your home network using the provided Ethernet cable. Alternatively, you can use a wireless connection (see Section 2.4).
4. Power on your television and select the correct HDMI input.

2.3. Setting up the Steam Controller

1. Open the battery compartment on the back of the Steam Controller.
2. Insert the two AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity.
3. The Steam Controller connects wirelessly via a USB dongle. This dongle is typically found in a hidden compartment on the underside of the Steam Link device. Insert the dongle into one of the USB ports on the Steam Link.
4. Press the Steam button on the controller to power it on and establish a connection.

2.4. Initial Software Configuration

Upon first boot, the Steam Link will guide you through a setup process:

• Network Connection: If not using Ethernet, select your Wi-Fi network and enter the password.
• PC Detection: The Steam Link will scan your network for PCs running Steam. Ensure Steam is running on your PC and logged in.
• Pairing: Select your PC from the list and enter the four-digit code displayed on your TV into the Steam client on your PC to complete pairing.
• Updates: The device may download and install firmware updates. Allow this process to complete.

3. Operating Instructions

3.1. Navigating Steam Big Picture Mode

Once connected, the Steam Link will display Steam's Big Picture Mode interface on your TV. This interface is optimized for controller navigation and large screens.

• Use the Steam Controller's joysticks and touchpads to navigate menus.
• The 'A' button typically confirms selections, and the 'B' button goes back.

3.2. Launching Games

1. From Big Picture Mode, navigate to your Library.
2. Select the game you wish to play.
3. Choose Play. The game will launch on your PC and stream to your TV.

3.3. Using the Steam Controller

The Steam Controller features dual trackpads, an analog stick, face buttons, and dual-stage triggers. It is highly customizable, allowing you to tailor controls for various game types, including those not traditionally designed for controllers.

• Trackpads: Can emulate mouse input or traditional D-pads.
• Analog Stick: Functions as a standard joystick.
• Face Buttons (A, B, X, Y): Standard action buttons.
• Triggers: Dual-stage for precise input (e.g., light press for aiming, full press for firing).

Controller configurations can be adjusted within Steam's Big Picture Mode for individual games.

3.4. Streaming Non-Steam Games

You can add non-Steam games to your Steam library on your PC and then stream them via the Steam Link. This allows you to play a broader range of PC titles on your TV.

4. Maintenance

4.1. Cleaning

To clean the Steam Link device and controller, use a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using liquid cleaners or abrasive materials, as these can damage the surfaces.

4.2. Software Updates

The Steam Link regularly receives software updates from Valve to improve performance, add features, and fix bugs. Ensure your device is connected to the internet to receive these updates automatically. You can manually check for updates in the system settings within Big Picture Mode.

4.3. Network Optimization

For the best streaming experience, a wired Ethernet connection between your Steam Link and your router, and between your PC and your router, is highly recommended. If using Wi-Fi, a strong 5GHz signal is preferable to minimize latency and improve stream quality.

5. Troubleshooting

5.1. No Picture on TV

• Ensure the HDMI cable is securely connected to both the Steam Link and the TV.
• Verify your TV is set to the correct HDMI input.
• Check that the Steam Link is powered on (indicated by a light on the device).

5.2. Controller Not Responding

• Check the Steam Controller batteries and replace if necessary.
• Ensure the USB dongle is properly inserted into the Steam Link.
• Re-pair the controller by holding down the Steam button and following on-screen prompts if available, or by restarting both the Steam Link and the controller.

5.3. Poor Streaming Performance (Lag, Stuttering, Pixelation)

• Wired Connection: Prioritize using Ethernet cables for both your Steam Link and gaming PC.
• Wi-Fi Signal: If using Wi-Fi, ensure a strong 5GHz signal. Reduce interference from other wireless devices.
• Network Congestion: Avoid heavy network usage (e.g., large downloads, other streaming services) on your home network while streaming games.
• PC Performance: Ensure your gaming PC meets the game's requirements and is not under heavy load from other applications.
• Steam Link Settings: Adjust streaming quality settings within Big Picture Mode (e.g., lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate).

5.4. Game Compatibility Issues

While most Steam games are compatible, some may not function perfectly with the Steam Controller or streaming. Check community forums for specific game configurations or workarounds.
