Safety Information

WARNING: Always wear approved eye protection when using this device. This tester is designed to detect AC voltage; it is not a substitute for proper lockout/tagout procedures. Always follow all applicable safety regulations and procedures for working with electrical systems.

  • Verify the tester's operation on a known live source before and after each use.
  • Do not rely solely on this tester to determine if a circuit is de-energized.

Setup

The HVNCVT-1 comes ready for use with a pre-installed 9-volt battery. If battery replacement is needed, refer to the Maintenance section.

  1. Unpack the tester from its durable carrying case.
  2. Inspect the tester for any visible damage before first use.
  3. Press the power button to turn on the device. The indicator lights should illuminate, and an audible beep should confirm it's powered on.

Operating Instructions

The HVNCVT-1 offers two distinct voltage detection ranges:

  • LOW Range (50V AC to 1.5kV AC): Ideal for detecting lower voltage lines and cables.
  • HIGH Range (1.5kV AC to 132kV AC): Suitable for higher voltage applications, such as overhead conductors.

Selecting a Range:

Press the appropriate range button (50-1.5k VAC for low range or 1.5k-132k VAC for high range) to select the desired detection sensitivity. The corresponding indicator light will illuminate.

Testing for Voltage:

  1. Ensure the tester is powered on and the correct range is selected.
  2. Hold the tester by the handle, keeping your hands clear of the sensing tip.
  3. Carefully approach the conductor or cable to be tested with the sensing tip.
  4. If AC voltage is detected, the tester will emit an audible beep and the visual alert lights will flash. The intensity of the beeping and flashing may increase as you get closer to the voltage source.
  5. To confirm the presence of voltage, move the tester away and then back towards the source. Consistent alerts indicate voltage presence.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and accuracy of your Klein Tools HVNCVT-1, regular maintenance is recommended:

  • Cleaning: Wipe the tester with a clean, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the tester in its provided carrying case in a cool, dry place when not in use.
  • Battery Replacement: The tester uses one 9-volt battery. If the low battery indicator illuminates or the tester fails to power on, replace the battery. To replace, open the battery compartment cover, remove the old battery, insert a new 9-volt battery observing polarity, and securely close the cover.

Troubleshooting
