Setup and Installation
Proper installation is crucial for the optimal performance and longevity of your filter. Always ensure the water supply is turned off before beginning any installation or maintenance.
- Preparation:
- Ensure you have the correct filter housing compatible with 20" x 2.5" filters.
- Gather necessary tools: housing wrench, bucket, clean cloths.
- Turn off the main water supply to the filter housing.
- Relieve pressure from the housing by opening a nearby faucet or using the housing's pressure release button.
- Removing Old Filter (if applicable):
- Unscrew the filter housing sump using the housing wrench.
- Carefully remove the old filter cartridge and dispose of it properly.
- Clean the inside of the housing sump and the O-ring groove. Inspect the O-ring for cracks or wear; replace if necessary. Lubricate the O-ring with a silicone-based lubricant if desired.
- Installing New Filter:
- Unwrap the new Harmsco 801-5-20 filter cartridge.
- Insert the new filter into the housing, ensuring it seats correctly on the center standpipe.
- Screw the housing sump back onto the housing head. Hand-tighten, then use the wrench for an additional 1/4 to 1/2 turn to ensure a snug fit. Do not overtighten.
- System Startup:
- Slowly turn on the main water supply, allowing the housing to fill gradually.
- Once the housing is full and water begins to flow, check for leaks around the housing.
- Open a nearby cold water faucet to purge air from the system until the water flows smoothly without air bubbles.
Safety Note: Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves and eye protection during installation and maintenance.
Operating Instructions
Once installed, the Harmsco 801-5-20 filter operates passively, continuously filtering water as it passes through the system. No user interaction is required during normal operation.
- The filter will begin removing sediment immediately upon water flow.
- Monitor water pressure. A noticeable drop in water pressure is often an indication that the filter is becoming clogged with sediment and requires cleaning or replacement.
- The filter is designed for cold water applications. Do not use with hot water unless specified by the housing manufacturer.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the filter's efficiency and extends its lifespan. The Harmsco 801-5-20 is a pleated filter, which can often be cleaned and reused, depending on the type of sediment and water quality.
- Cleaning the Filter:
- Turn off the water supply and relieve pressure as described in the "Setup" section.
- Remove the filter cartridge from the housing.
- Rinse the pleated surface of the filter under running water (e.g., a garden hose) to dislodge trapped sediment. For best results, rinse from the inside out to push particles off the pleats.
- Avoid using harsh chemicals or brushes that could damage the filter media.
- Inspect the filter for any tears or damage to the pleats. If damaged, the filter should be replaced.
- Reinstall the cleaned filter into the housing, following the "Installing New Filter" steps.
- Replacement:
- Even with cleaning, pleated filters have a finite lifespan. Replace the filter when cleaning no longer restores adequate flow or if the filter media appears degraded.
- Replacement frequency varies based on water quality and usage, typically every 3-6 months for residential use, or when a significant pressure drop is observed.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Reduced Water Flow/Pressure Drop | Filter is clogged with sediment. | Clean or replace the filter cartridge. |
| Water Still Contains Sediment | Filter is damaged or incorrect micron rating for sediment type. | Inspect filter for damage and replace if necessary. Ensure the 5-micron rating is appropriate for the particles you wish to remove. |
| Water Leaks from Housing | Improperly seated O-ring, damaged O-ring, or loose housing sump. | Turn off water, relieve pressure, check O-ring for proper seating and damage (replace if needed), and ensure housing sump is tightened correctly. |
