4. Setup and Preparation

4.1 Skin Preparation

  1. Gently remove the old pouch system, if applicable, by peeling it downwards from the top while supporting the skin.
  2. Cleanse the skin around the stoma with warm water and a soft cloth. Avoid using soaps with oils or lotions, as these can interfere with adhesion.
  3. Rinse the skin thoroughly and pat it completely dry. The skin must be clean and dry for proper adhesion.
  4. Inspect the skin for any irritation or breakdown. Consult your healthcare professional if issues are present.

4.2 Stoma Measurement (General Guidance)

This pouch features a pre-cut 3/4" (19mm) stoma opening. Ensure this size is appropriate for your stoma. If your stoma size changes or if the pre-cut opening does not fit correctly, consult your healthcare professional for alternative products. The opening should fit snugly around the stoma without touching it, protecting the surrounding skin.

5. Application of the Pouch

  1. Ensure the skin around the stoma is clean and dry as described in Section 4.1.
  2. Remove the protective backing from the Durahesive skin barrier.
  3. Center the pre-cut opening over your stoma.
  4. Gently press the skin barrier onto the skin, starting from the stoma and working outwards. Ensure there are no wrinkles or creases. Apply gentle pressure for 30-60 seconds to ensure good adhesion, especially around the stoma.
  5. Smooth the comfort panel of the pouch downwards.
  6. Close the drainable end of the pouch using the provided tail clip. Fold the tail end upwards and secure it with the clip.

6. Operating: Draining the Pouch

Empty the pouch when it is one-third to one-half full to prevent excessive weight from pulling on the skin barrier and to maintain discretion.

  1. Position yourself over a toilet.
  2. Unclip the tail clip from the bottom of the pouch.
  3. Unroll the tail end of the pouch and direct the opening into the toilet.
  4. Gently squeeze the pouch to facilitate complete emptying of its contents.
  5. Once empty, clean the inside and outside of the tail opening with a piece of toilet paper or a damp cloth.
  6. Roll up the tail end and secure it firmly with the tail clip. Ensure the clip is properly closed to prevent leakage.

7. Removal of the Pouch

Change the pouch system regularly, as advised by your healthcare professional, or if you experience discomfort or leakage.

  1. Prepare a new pouch system and all necessary supplies.
  2. Gently peel the skin barrier downwards from the top, away from your skin, while supporting the skin with your other hand.
  3. Once removed, place the used pouch into a disposal bag.
  4. Cleanse and dry the skin around the stoma as described in Section 4.1 before applying a new pouch.

8. Maintenance and Care

Proper care of your ostomy site and pouch system is crucial for skin health and comfort.

  • Skin Care: Regularly inspect the skin around your stoma for any redness, irritation, or breakdown. Maintain a clean and dry peristomal skin area.
  • Pouch Changes: Follow your healthcare professional's recommendations for frequency of pouch changes. Do not wear the pouch longer than recommended.
  • Odor Control: The pouch is designed to be odor-proof. If odors are detected, check for proper seal, ensure the tail clip is secure, or consider changing the pouch.
  • Bathing/Showering: You may shower or bathe with the pouch in place. The skin barrier is water-resistant. Pat the pouch and skin barrier dry thoroughly after bathing.

9. Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Leakage Improper application, incorrect stoma size, worn-out barrier, pouch too full. Reapply pouch carefully, ensure correct stoma opening fit, change pouch more frequently, empty pouch when 1/3 to 1/2 full.
Skin Irritation/Redness Leakage, allergic reaction, improper cleaning, frequent changes, aggressive removal. Check for leaks, ensure proper skin care, consult healthcare professional for persistent irritation.
Odor Loose seal, unclipped tail, certain foods, infection. Check pouch seal and tail clip, review diet, consult healthcare professional if infection is suspected.

If troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, or if you experience severe discomfort or persistent problems, contact your healthcare professional immediately.
