ASUS uATX X99-M WS Motherboard User Manual

Model: X99-M WS

1. Introduction

This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your ASUS uATX X99-M WS motherboard. Designed for high performance and reliability, this microATX board integrates advanced features such as 5-Way Optimization, ASUS OC Socket, USB 3.1, and 802.11ac Wi-Fi, complemented by server-grade components for enhanced stability.

2. Setup

Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance. Follow these steps carefully:

  1. Prepare the Chassis: Ensure your computer chassis is compatible with the microATX form factor. Install standoffs in the appropriate locations within the chassis.
  2. Install the CPU: Carefully align your LGA 2011-3 CPU with the OC Socket on the motherboard. Lower the CPU into the socket, ensuring it is seated correctly, then secure it with the retention levers.
  3. Install the CPU Cooler: Apply thermal paste to the CPU and install the compatible CPU cooler according to its manufacturer's instructions. Connect the CPU fan cable to the CPU_FAN header on the motherboard.
  4. Install Memory Modules (RAM): This motherboard supports DDR4 RAM. Insert the memory modules into the DIMM slots (DIMM_A1, DIMM_B1, DIMM_C1, DIMM_D1) by aligning the notch on the module with the key in the slot and pressing down firmly until the clips lock into place. Refer to the motherboard layout for recommended dual-channel or quad-channel configurations.
  5. Mount the Motherboard: Carefully place the motherboard into the chassis, aligning the screw holes with the installed standoffs. Secure the motherboard using screws.
  6. Connect Power Supply: Connect the 24-pin ATX power connector (EATXPWR) and the 8-pin ATX 12V power connector (EATX12V) from your power supply unit (PSU) to the corresponding headers on the motherboard.
  7. Install Expansion Cards: Insert your PCI Express 3.0 x16 graphics cards or other expansion cards into the appropriate PCIEX16 slots. Ensure they are fully seated and secured with the chassis retention mechanism.
  8. Connect Storage Devices: Connect SATA data cables from your storage drives (HDDs/SSDs) to the SATA 6Gb/s ports on the motherboard. If using an M.2 SSD, install it into the M.2 Support slot and secure it.
  9. Connect Front Panel Cables: Connect the power button, reset button, HDD LED, power LED, and front panel USB/audio connectors from your chassis to the corresponding headers on the motherboard. Pay close attention to polarity for LEDs.
  10. Connect Peripherals: Connect your monitor, keyboard, mouse, and other peripherals to the appropriate ports on the motherboard's rear I/O panel.

3. Operating

Once all components are installed and connected, you can power on your system:

  1. Power On: Ensure the power supply switch is in the 'ON' position. Press the power button on your computer chassis. The system should initiate the boot process.
  2. BIOS/UEFI Setup: During startup, press the designated key (usually DEL or F2) to enter the BIOS/UEFI setup utility. Here, you can configure system settings, boot order, and enable features like ASUS 5-Way Optimization for performance tuning.
  3. Operating System Installation: Install your preferred operating system (e.g., Windows 10) by booting from an installation media (USB drive or DVD).
  4. Driver Installation: After OS installation, install the latest drivers for your motherboard components (chipset, audio, LAN, Wi-Fi, USB 3.1) from the ASUS support website or the provided driver disc.

4. Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and stable operation of your motherboard:

  • Dust Removal: Periodically clean dust from the motherboard and components using compressed air. Accumulation of dust can lead to overheating and reduced performance.
  • Component Inspection: Visually inspect all connections and components for any signs of wear, damage, or loose connections.
  • BIOS/UEFI Updates: Check the ASUS support website for the latest BIOS/UEFI updates. Updates can improve system stability, compatibility, and performance. Follow the update instructions provided by ASUS carefully.

5. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues, consider the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • No Power/No Boot:
    • Ensure all power cables (24-pin ATX, 8-pin ATX 12V) are securely connected to the motherboard and PSU.
    • Verify the power supply switch is in the 'ON' position.
    • Check front panel connections, especially the power button header.
    • Reseat RAM modules. Incorrectly seated RAM is a common cause of no-boot issues.
    • Check the Q-Code LED on the motherboard for diagnostic codes that can indicate the source of the problem.
  • System Instability/Crashes:
    • Ensure all drivers are up-to-date.
    • Check CPU and GPU temperatures. Overheating can cause instability.
    • Test memory modules individually to identify a faulty stick.
    • Reset BIOS settings to default.
  • Peripheral Not Detected:
    • Ensure the peripheral is properly connected to the correct port.
    • Install or update relevant drivers for the peripheral.
    • Test the peripheral on another system or try a different port on your motherboard.
