Setup

Proper installation and calibration are crucial for the optimal performance of your Spektrum GPS Module. Follow these steps carefully:

  1. Physical Installation: Secure the GPS module within your aircraft. For models like the Carbon Cub, it typically fits into a designated notch. Ensure it is firmly secured to prevent dislodgement during flight. Users often use tape for additional security.
  2. Connection: Connect the GPS module to the flight controller. Be mindful of the port location and ensure a secure connection, as wires can easily be pulled out.
  3. Initial GPS Lock: Power on your transmitter first, then your aircraft. The aircraft will enter GPS seeking mode, indicated by the elevator wagging slowly. Once a GPS lock is acquired, the elevator will wag faster.
  4. Compass Calibration: After GPS lock, the aircraft will enter compass calibration mode. Follow the specific instructions provided with your aircraft for this process. A common method involves holding the aircraft nose downward for approximately five seconds, then flipping it nose over nose, and finally rolling it horizontally. Ensure the transmitter is turned off first, then the receiver, for the calibration to be accepted.

  • Setting Home Position: Once the aircraft has achieved GPS lock and is ready for takeoff, hold down the bind button on your transmitter. The aircraft's control surfaces will wag to confirm the home position has been set. Ensure the aircraft is pointed straight down the runway for accurate autoland functionality.
  • Virtual Fence: This feature prevents the aircraft from flying too far away. If the aircraft approaches the boundary of the virtual fence, it will automatically turn back. The airplane will rock its wings to indicate that you have regained control.
  • Holding Pattern: Pause your flight by pushing a designated button on your transmitter. The aircraft will enter a holding pattern at a safe altitude (e.g., 120 feet). Push the button again to cancel the command and resume manual control.
  • Autoland: To initiate autoland, push and hold the designated button on your transmitter. The aircraft will automatically land near the takeoff location. The accuracy of the landing depends on the precisely set home position.
