1. Important Safety Instructions

Always follow basic safety precautions when using electrical tools to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and personal injury.

  • Read all instructions: Before operating the tool, read and understand all safety warnings and instructions.
  • Work area safety: Keep your work area clean and well-lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
  • Electrical safety: Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces.
  • Personal safety: Stay alert, watch what you are doing, and use common sense. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including eye protection, hearing protection, and a dust mask.
  • Tool use and care: Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. Disconnect the plug from the power source before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools.
  • Specific circular saw safety:
    • Keep hands away from the cutting area and the blade.
    • Do not reach underneath the workpiece.
    • Adjust the cutting depth to the thickness of the workpiece.
    • Never hold the workpiece in your hands or across your leg while cutting.
    • Check the lower guard for proper closing before each use.
    • Always use blades of correct size and shape.

4. Setup and Assembly

4.1 Unpacking

Carefully remove the circular saw and all accessories from the packaging. Inspect the tool for any damage that may have occurred during shipping. Do not discard packaging materials until you have confirmed all components are present and the tool is functioning correctly.

4.2 Blade Installation

  1. Ensure the saw is unplugged from the power source.
  2. Locate the blade wrench, typically stored on the saw itself or included in the packaging.
  3. Press and hold the spindle lock button (if present) to prevent the blade from rotating.
  4. Use the blade wrench to loosen the arbor nut by turning it in the direction indicated on the saw (usually opposite to the blade's rotation).
  5. Lift the lower blade guard and remove the old blade (if applicable) and the outer washer.
  6. Place the new 7-1/4 inch blade onto the arbor, ensuring the teeth are pointing in the direction of the arrow on the blade guard.
  7. Replace the outer washer and tighten the arbor nut firmly with the blade wrench while holding the spindle lock. Do not overtighten.
  8. Release the spindle lock and check that the blade rotates freely and the lower guard moves smoothly.

4.3 Adjusting Cutting Depth

The cutting depth should be set so that the blade extends approximately 1/8 inch (3 mm) below the workpiece. This minimizes kickback and ensures a cleaner cut.

  1. Unplug the saw.
  2. Loosen the depth adjustment lever or knob.
  3. Place the saw's base plate flat on the workpiece.
  4. Adjust the saw body up or down until the blade extends the desired amount below the workpiece.
  5. Tighten the depth adjustment lever securely.

4.4 Adjusting Bevel Angle

The saw can make bevel cuts up to a certain angle (e.g., 45 degrees).

  1. Unplug the saw.
  2. Loosen the bevel adjustment lever or knob, usually located at the front of the base plate.
  3. Tilt the base plate to the desired angle, aligning the indicator with the angle scale.
  4. Tighten the bevel adjustment lever securely.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Before Starting

  • Ensure the workpiece is securely clamped or supported.
  • Verify the blade is sharp and appropriate for the material being cut.
  • Check that the power cord is free from damage and positioned safely.
  • Wear all recommended personal protective equipment.

5.2 Making a Cut

  1. Plug the saw into a suitable power outlet.
  2. Position the front edge of the saw's base plate on the workpiece, ensuring the blade is clear of the material.
  3. Align the cutting line with the appropriate notch on the base plate.
  4. Depress the safety lock-off button (if present) and then squeeze the trigger switch to start the saw. Allow the blade to reach full speed before beginning the cut.
  5. Slowly and steadily push the saw forward through the workpiece, maintaining firm pressure on the base plate against the material. Do not force the saw.
  6. As the cut progresses, the lower blade guard will retract automatically. Ensure it closes properly once the cut is complete and the blade is clear of the material.
  7. Release the trigger switch to stop the saw. Wait for the blade to come to a complete stop before lifting the saw from the workpiece.

5.3 Kickback Prevention

Kickback is a sudden reaction to a pinched, bound, or misaligned saw blade, causing an uncontrolled saw to lift up and out of the workpiece toward the operator. To avoid kickback:

  • Maintain a firm grip on the saw with both hands.
  • Ensure the workpiece is properly supported and stable.
  • Never cut freehand.
  • Do not bind the blade by forcing it through a cut.
  • Avoid cutting wet or warped wood.
  • Keep the blade sharp and clean.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your Surtek SC407C Circular Saw. Always unplug the tool before performing any maintenance.

6.1 Cleaning

  • After each use, clean dust and debris from the saw, especially around the blade guard and motor vents. Use a soft brush or compressed air.
  • Do not use solvents or harsh chemicals, as they may damage plastic parts.

6.2 Blade Care

  • Keep blades sharp and clean. Dull blades can cause kickback and strain the motor.
  • Remove resin and pitch buildup from the blade using a blade cleaner.
  • Replace damaged or warped blades immediately.

6.3 Carbon Brushes

The motor uses carbon brushes which wear down over time. If the saw experiences reduced power, excessive sparking, or stops working, the brushes may need inspection or replacement. This task is typically performed by a qualified service technician.

6.4 Storage

Store the saw in a dry, secure location out of reach of children. Protect the power cord from damage.
