2. Setup and Installation

2.1 Unpacking and Initial Inspection

Carefully unpack the UPS and its components. Inspect for any shipping damage. If damage is found, notify the carrier and dealer. The package should contain the UPS unit, a USB cable, and documentation.

2.2 Placement

Place the UPS on a flat, stable surface away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, or moisture. Ensure adequate ventilation around the unit. Do not block the ventilation openings.

2.3 Battery Connection

The UPS battery may be disconnected for shipping. Refer to the quick start guide for specific instructions on connecting the internal battery. For the BR1500G, the battery is typically pre-installed but may require a simple connection step. Ensure the battery is securely connected before proceeding.

2.4 Connecting Equipment

The BR1500G features 10 outlets. It is crucial to connect your devices to the correct outlets:

  • Battery Backup & Surge Protected Outlets (5 outlets): Connect critical equipment such as your computer, monitor, external hard drives, and network router to these outlets. These devices will receive power from the battery during an outage.
  • Surge Only Outlets (5 outlets): Connect non-critical equipment like printers, scanners, or speakers to these outlets. These devices are protected from surges but will not receive battery power during an outage.

2.5 Connecting to Utility Power

Plug the UPS power cord directly into a grounded 3-prong wall outlet. Avoid using extension cords or surge protectors with the UPS. Allow the UPS to charge for at least 24 hours before initial use to ensure full battery capacity.

2.6 PowerChute Software Installation

For advanced power management, automatic graceful shutdown, and energy monitoring, install the PowerChute Personal Edition software. Connect the UPS to your computer using the provided USB cable. Download the latest software version from the official APC website.

3. Operating Instructions

3.1 Turning the UPS On/Off

  • To Turn On: Press and hold the POWER button on the front panel until a short beep is heard. The LCD display will illuminate.
  • To Turn Off: Press and hold the POWER button until a long beep is heard and the display turns off.

3.2 Understanding the LCD Display

The LCD display provides critical information about the UPS status. Use the DISPLAY button to cycle through various parameters such as input voltage, output voltage, battery charge level, estimated runtime, load percentage, and event history.

3.3 Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR)

The UPS automatically corrects minor voltage fluctuations (sags and swells) without using battery power. This feature extends battery life by reducing the number of times the UPS switches to battery mode.

3.4 Power Outage Operation

During a power outage, the UPS will automatically switch to battery power, providing continuous power to connected critical devices. The UPS will emit an audible alarm (beeping) to indicate it is operating on battery. The LCD display will show the estimated runtime remaining.

If PowerChute software is installed and configured, it can initiate a graceful shutdown of your computer system before the battery is depleted, preventing data loss.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Battery Care and Replacement

The UPS contains a user-replaceable, sealed lead-acid battery. The battery typically lasts 3-5 years depending on usage and environmental conditions. The UPS will indicate when the battery needs replacement, usually via an alarm and a message on the LCD display.

When replacing the battery, use only APC-approved replacement battery cartridges (RBCs) to ensure compatibility and optimal performance. Refer to the APC website or contact support for the correct RBC model for your BR1500G.

4.2 Cleaning

Clean the exterior of the UPS with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners. Ensure ventilation openings are free from dust and debris to maintain proper airflow.

4.3 External Battery Pack (BR24BPG)

If you are using the optional BR24BPG External Battery Pack, ensure its connection cable is securely attached to the UPS. The external battery pack also contains user-replaceable batteries and should be maintained similarly to the UPS's internal battery.

5. Troubleshooting

This section provides solutions to common issues you might encounter with your APC Back-UPS Pro 1500VA. For more complex problems, refer to the full user manual available on the APC website or contact technical support.

5.1 UPS Does Not Turn On or No Power Output

  • Check Power Connection: Ensure the UPS power cord is securely plugged into a live, grounded wall outlet.
  • Battery Connection: Verify the internal battery is properly connected.
  • Charge Battery: Allow the UPS to charge for at least 24 hours. A completely discharged battery may take time to respond.
  • Overload: Disconnect some devices from the battery backup outlets. The UPS may be overloaded.
  • Circuit Breaker: Check if the circuit breaker on the back of the UPS has tripped. Press it in to reset.

5.2 UPS Beeps Continuously or Frequently

  • On Battery: If the utility power is out, the UPS will beep to indicate it's running on battery. This is normal.
  • Low Battery: A rapid beeping indicates a low battery. Save your work and shut down your computer.
  • Overload: A continuous tone often indicates an overload. Reduce the load on the battery backup outlets.
  • Battery Replacement: A specific alarm pattern may indicate the battery needs replacement. Check the LCD display for messages.

5.3 UPS Does Not Provide Expected Runtime

  • Battery Age: Batteries degrade over time. If the battery is older than 3-5 years, it may need replacement.
  • Load: Ensure only critical devices are connected to battery backup outlets. High load reduces runtime.
  • Battery Not Fully Charged: Ensure the UPS has been plugged in and charging for at least 24 hours.
  • Battery Test: Perform a battery self-test (if available via PowerChute or front panel) to assess battery health.
