3. Setup and Installation

The NH-D15S utilizes Noctua's SecuFirm2™ mounting system, which is designed for straightforward installation on various Intel and AMD sockets. Please refer to the specific installation manual provided with your cooler for detailed, step-by-step instructions for your CPU socket type (e.g., Intel LGA1851, LGA1700, LGA1200, LGA115x, and AMD AM5 & AM4).

3.1 General Installation Steps (Consult Socket-Specific Manual for Details):

  1. Prepare Motherboard: Install the appropriate backplate (for AMD/Intel) and mounting bars onto your motherboard. Ensure correct orientation and secure with the provided screws and spacers.
  2. Apply Thermal Compound: Clean the CPU surface and apply a small amount of Noctua NT-H1 thermal compound to the center of the CPU's integrated heat spreader (IHS). A pea-sized dot is generally sufficient.
  3. Applying thermal paste to a CPU

Image 3.1: Proper application of thermal compound to the CPU surface.

  4. Mount Heatsink: Carefully place the NH-D15S heatsink onto the CPU, aligning the mounting screws with the mounting bars. Tighten the screws evenly until secure.
  5. Attach Fan: Secure the NF-A15 PWM fan to the heatsink using the provided fan clips. Ensure the fan is oriented to push air through the heatsink fins towards the rear of the case.

  7. Connect Fan Cable: Connect the NF-A15 fan's 4-pin PWM cable to the CPU_FAN header on your motherboard. If desired, use the Low-Noise Adaptor (L.N.A.) to reduce maximum fan speed and noise levels.

Note: The NH-D15S is designed for optimal RAM and PCIe compatibility. Its asymmetrical design allows for clearance of the top PCIe slot on most µATX and ATX motherboards, and the single fan setup with recessed lower fins ensures 100% RAM compatibility with modules up to 65mm height.

4. Operating Instructions

Once installed, the Noctua NH-D15S operates automatically, controlled by your motherboard's PWM fan header. The fan speed adjusts based on CPU temperature, providing efficient cooling while minimizing noise.

  • BIOS/UEFI Settings: For optimal performance and noise levels, ensure your motherboard's BIOS/UEFI fan control settings for the CPU_FAN header are set to PWM mode and configured to a suitable fan curve.
  • Monitoring: Regularly monitor your CPU temperatures using system monitoring software to ensure the cooler is functioning effectively.
  • Low-Noise Adaptor (L.N.A.): If you prefer an even quieter operation, connect the included Low-Noise Adaptor between the fan and the motherboard's CPU_FAN header. This will reduce the maximum fan speed.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your NH-D15S CPU cooler.

  • Dust Removal: Periodically clean dust from the heatsink fins and fan blades using compressed air or a soft brush. Ensure the fan is not spinning during cleaning to prevent damage.
  • Thermal Compound: The NT-H1 thermal compound has excellent long-term stability. However, if you remove the cooler for any reason (e.g., CPU upgrade), it is recommended to clean off the old thermal compound from both the CPU and cooler base and apply a fresh layer.
  • Fan Inspection: Check the fan for any signs of wear or damage. Ensure the fan cable is securely connected.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your NH-D15S cooler, consider the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • High CPU Temperatures:
    • Verify the heatsink is securely mounted and making proper contact with the CPU.
    • Ensure thermal compound was applied correctly and evenly.
    • Check fan operation: Is the fan spinning? Is it connected to the CPU_FAN header?
    • Confirm proper airflow within your PC case.
    • Remove the Low-Noise Adaptor if high temperatures persist, as it limits fan speed.
  • Excessive Fan Noise:
    • Ensure the fan is securely attached and not vibrating against other components.
    • Check for dust buildup on the fan blades or heatsink.
    • Enable PWM fan control in your motherboard's BIOS/UEFI to allow the fan speed to adjust based on temperature.
    • Connect the Low-Noise Adaptor (L.N.A.) to reduce the fan's maximum speed.
  • Fan Not Spinning:
    • Verify the 4-pin PWM cable is correctly plugged into the motherboard's CPU_FAN header.
    • Check BIOS/UEFI settings to ensure the CPU_FAN header is enabled and configured correctly.
    • Test the fan on another fan header if available.
