Setup
1. Unpacking and Component Check

2. Connecting the Power
- Connect the AC power adapter to the DC IN jack on the back of the fax machine.
- Plug the AC power adapter into a standard electrical outlet.

3. Connecting the Telephone Line
- Connect one end of the telephone line cord to the LINE jack on the back of the fax machine.

1. Sending a Fax

- Lift the handset and dial the recipient's fax number.
- Wait for the recipient's fax machine to answer and emit a high-pitched tone (fax tone).
- Press the START/FAX button.
- Hang up the handset once the transmission begins.
Automatic Sending:
- Place the document(s) face down in the document feeder.
- Enter the recipient's fax number using the numeric keypad.
- Press the START/FAX button. The machine will automatically dial and send the fax.
2. Receiving a Fax
The KX-FT981 SX can receive faxes automatically or manually.
Automatic Reception:
Ensure the machine is set to "Auto Answer" mode. When a fax call comes in, the machine will automatically answer and print the fax.
Manual Reception:
- When the phone rings, lift the handset.
- If you hear a fax tone, press the START/FAX button.
- Hang up the handset once the fax reception begins.
3. Making a Telephone Call
The fax machine can also function as a standard telephone.
- Lift the telephone handset.
- Dial the desired phone number using the numeric keypad.
- Speak into the handset.
- Hang up the handset when the call is complete.
4. Speed Dial Programming

- Press the PROGRAM button.
