Setup

1. Unpacking and Component Check

2. Connecting the Power

1. Connect the AC power adapter to the DC IN jack on the back of the fax machine.
2. Plug the AC power adapter into a standard electrical outlet.
3. Ensure the power indicator light on the fax machine illuminates.

3. Connecting the Telephone Line

1. Connect one end of the telephone line cord to the LINE jack on the back of the fax machine.
2. Connect the other end of the telephone line cord to your wall telephone jack.
3. If you are connecting an external telephone, connect it to the EXT. jack on the fax machine.

4. Loading Thermal Paper

The KX-FT981 SX uses thermal paper for printing faxes and reports. Follow these steps to load a new roll:

1. Open the paper cover on the top of the fax machine.
2. Insert the thermal paper roll with the glossy side facing up. Ensure the paper feeds smoothly from the bottom of the roll.
3. Pull a small length of paper out past the cutting edge.
4. Close the paper cover firmly until it clicks into place.

5. Initial Settings (Date and Time)

1. Sending a Fax

Manual Sending:

1. Place the document(s) face down in the document feeder.
2. Lift the handset and dial the recipient's fax number.
3. Wait for the recipient's fax machine to answer and emit a high-pitched tone (fax tone).
4. Press the START/FAX button.
5. Hang up the handset once the transmission begins.

Automatic Sending:

1. Place the document(s) face down in the document feeder.

Automatic Reception:

Manual Reception:

1. When the phone rings, lift the handset.

2. Dial the desired phone number using the numeric keypad.

4. Speed Dial Programming

Program frequently used numbers for quick dialing.

1. Press the PROGRAM button.
2. Follow the on-screen prompts to select a speed dial location.
3. Enter the telephone or fax number.
4. Press SET or ENTER to save.
