CTA Tools 25069 Pro-Thread Inserts M6-1 Instruction Manual

Model: 25069 | Brand: CTA Tools

1. Product Overview

The CTA Tools 25069 Pro-Thread Inserts are designed for repairing and strengthening damaged or worn threads in various materials. These inserts are suitable for use in cast iron, steel, aluminum, and other metals and plastics. They are particularly effective for automotive repair applications, including spark plug ports, as well as for outdoor power equipment, motorcycle repairs, and farm equipment. The M6-1 inserts provide a permanent, wear-resistant internal thread that is generally stronger than the original parent material thread.

This package includes 10 inserts, each with a 1.5D length (9mm). These inserts are intended for use with CTA Kit #35069.

2. Safety Information

  • Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses and gloves, when performing thread repair.
  • Ensure the workpiece is securely clamped before drilling or tapping.
  • Use the correct drill bit size and tap for the specific insert being installed. Refer to the CTA Kit #35069 instructions for precise sizing.
  • Keep tools and inserts out of reach of children.
  • Dispose of metal shavings and used materials responsibly.

3. Installation and Operating Instructions

The installation process for CTA Tools Pro-Thread Inserts follows a four-step procedure: DRILL, TAP, INSERT, SNAP. This process requires the use of CTA Kit #35069, which contains the necessary drill bits, taps, and installation tools.

Step 1: DRILL

Using the drill bit provided in CTA Kit #35069, drill out the damaged thread. Ensure the drill is held perpendicular to the surface to create a straight hole. Clean any debris from the drilled hole.

Step 2: TAP

Select the correct tap from CTA Kit #35069. Apply a suitable cutting fluid to the tap. Carefully tap the newly drilled hole, turning the tap clockwise while applying light pressure. Periodically reverse the tap a quarter turn to break chips and prevent binding. Continue until the tap has cut new threads to the required depth. Remove the tap and thoroughly clean the tapped hole, ensuring no metal chips remain.

Step 3: INSERT

Place one CTA Tools 25069 Pro-Thread Insert onto the installation tool from CTA Kit #35069. Ensure the tang of the insert engages with the slot on the installation tool. Turn the installation tool clockwise, applying slight downward pressure, to wind the insert into the newly tapped hole. Continue until the top of the insert is flush with or slightly below the surface of the workpiece. Do not over-tighten.

Step 4: SNAP

Once the insert is fully seated, remove the installation tool. Use the tang break-off tool (also from CTA Kit #35069) to snap off the tang at the bottom of the insert. Position the tang break-off tool over the tang and strike it sharply with a hammer. The tang should break cleanly. Remove any broken tang pieces from the hole. The new thread is now ready for use.

4. Maintenance

Pro-Thread inserts themselves are designed for permanent installation and require no ongoing maintenance once properly installed. However, proper care of the associated tools (drill bits, taps, installation tools) from CTA Kit #35069 is essential for continued effective use.

  • Clean all tools after each use to remove metal shavings and cutting fluid residue.
  • Store tools in a dry environment to prevent rust and corrosion.
  • Inspect drill bits and taps for wear or damage before each use. Replace worn tools to ensure accurate and effective thread repair.

5. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues during the thread repair process, consider the following:

  • Insert not seating correctly: Ensure the tapped hole is clean and free of debris. Verify that the correct tap was used and that the threads are fully formed. Do not force the insert; remove and re-evaluate the tapped hole.
  • Tang not breaking cleanly: Ensure the tang break-off tool is correctly positioned and a sharp, firm strike is applied. If the tang is difficult to break, it may indicate the insert is not fully seated or the tang break-off tool is worn.
  • New thread feels loose: This could indicate an incorrect drill size was used, or the tapping process was not performed correctly. It is crucial to use the specific drill bit and tap from CTA Kit #35069 for optimal results.
