Connecting to a DSLR/SLR Camera for Astrophotography

The SVBONY 2X Barlow Lens features an M42x0.75mm thread, allowing it to function as a T-adapter for connecting a DSLR or SLR camera to your telescope. This requires a camera-specific T-ring adapter (sold separately).

  1. Remove the eyepiece from the Barlow Lens.
  2. Thread the appropriate T-ring adapter for your camera model onto the M42x0.75mm thread of the Barlow Lens.
  3. Attach your DSLR/SLR camera to the T-ring adapter.
  4. Insert the Barlow Lens assembly (with camera attached) into your telescope's 1.25-inch focuser or diagonal. Secure it with the focuser's thumbscrew.
  5. Use your camera's live view or tethered shooting software to focus and capture images.

Operating Instructions

The 2X Barlow Lens effectively doubles the focal length of your telescope when used with an eyepiece. This results in a higher magnification for observing celestial objects.

  • Magnification Calculation: To determine the total magnification, multiply the magnification of your eyepiece by the Barlow factor (2X). For example, a 10mm eyepiece used with this 2X Barlow will provide the same magnification as a 5mm eyepiece.
  • Field of View: Using a Barlow lens will result in a narrower field of view compared to using the eyepiece alone.
  • Focusing: After inserting the Barlow lens and eyepiece, you will need to re-adjust your telescope's focuser to achieve a sharp image.

Maintenance

Proper care and maintenance will ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Barlow lens.

  • Cleaning the Optics: Use a soft, lint-free cloth specifically designed for optical lenses. For stubborn smudges, use a small amount of optical cleaning fluid applied to the cloth, not directly to the lens. Avoid touching the optical surfaces with bare hands.
  • Dust Protection: Always keep the dust caps on the Barlow lens when not in use to prevent dust accumulation.
  • Storage: Store the Barlow lens in a clean, dry environment, preferably in its original packaging or a protective case.
  • Detachable Body: The Barlow lens features a detachable tube body for easier access to optical elements for cleaning. Carefully unscrew the components if necessary for thorough cleaning, and reassemble securely.

Troubleshooting

  • Blurred Image: Ensure all components (Barlow, eyepiece, camera) are securely seated and tightened. Re-adjust the telescope's focuser carefully. Atmospheric conditions can also cause blurring.
  • No Image/Dark Image: Verify that the telescope's dust caps are removed. Ensure the Barlow lens and eyepiece are correctly inserted and aligned. Check for any obstructions in the optical path.
  • Eyepiece Wobbles: Ensure the thumbscrew on the Barlow lens is tightened sufficiently to hold the eyepiece securely. If using with a telescope, ensure the focuser's thumbscrew is also tight.
  • Difficulty Attaching Camera: Confirm you are using the correct T-ring adapter for your specific camera model and that it is properly threaded onto the M42 thread of the Barlow lens.
