4. Installation

4.1 Pre-Installation Check

Before installing the pressure tank, it is critical to verify the existing water line pressure in your system. The air pre-charge pressure of the tank's bladder must match the cut-in pressure of your well pump or the static pressure of your water system. The tank comes factory pre-charged to 38 PSI, but this may need adjustment.

Use a pressure gauge to measure your system's pressure. If the tank's pre-charge needs adjustment, use an air pump (like a bicycle pump) on the valve stem (similar to a tire valve) to add or release air until it matches your system's cut-in pressure.

4.2 Installation Steps

  1. Turn off Water Supply: Locate and close the main water shut-off valve to your home or well system.
  2. Depressurize System: Open a faucet at the lowest point in your home to drain water and relieve pressure from the system.
  3. Select Location: Install the tank in a location protected from freezing temperatures and physical damage. It should be easily accessible for maintenance.
  4. Connect to Water Line: Install the pressure tank inline with your water system, typically near the hot water heater or well pump. Use appropriate plumbing fittings and sealants to ensure leak-free connections.
  5. Restore Water Supply: Slowly open the main water shut-off valve.
  6. Bleed Air: Open faucets throughout your home, starting from the lowest to the highest, to purge air from the system until water flows smoothly.
  7. Check for Leaks: Inspect all connections for any signs of leaks.

5. Operation

Once properly installed and charged, the Amtrol WX 101 pressure tank operates automatically. It absorbs pressure fluctuations in your water system, reducing pump cycling and protecting your plumbing and appliances, especially your hot water heater, from excessive pressure due to thermal expansion.

6. Maintenance

  • Annual Pressure Check: Annually, or if you notice changes in water pressure or pump cycling, check the tank's air pre-charge. Turn off the water supply, drain the system, and use a pressure gauge to check the air pressure at the valve stem. Adjust if necessary to match your system's cut-in pressure.
  • Inspect for Damage: Periodically inspect the tank for any signs of corrosion, leaks, or physical damage.
  • System Flushing: Follow your well system's recommended flushing schedule to prevent sediment buildup.
