La Crosse Technology Sensor Protection Shield

Model: 925-1418

Introduction

The La Crosse Technology 925-1418 Sensor Protection Shield is designed to safeguard your outdoor temperature and/or humidity sensors from environmental elements such as rain, snow, and direct sunlight. This durable, tiered plastic shield ensures more accurate sensor readings by preventing direct exposure to harsh weather conditions. It is compatible with most La Crosse Technology sensors and offers versatile mounting options.

Package Contents

  • Sensor Protection Shield
  • Mounting Bracket
  • Mounting Screws
  • Zip Ties
  • Velcro Tape (for sensor attachment)

Setup and Installation

Follow these steps to properly install your sensor protection shield:

  1. Sensor Placement: Insert your compatible La Crosse Technology temperature and/or humidity sensor into the shield. Secure the sensor inside the shield using the provided Velcro tape. Ensure that the sensor's ID number and barcode are not covered by the Velcro, as this information may be needed for linking the sensor to your weather station or app.
  2. Secure the Shield: Slide the shield over the sensor and twist the base to lock it securely. The tiered design allows for optimal air ventilation around the sensor while providing protection.
  3. Choose Mounting Location: Select a suitable outdoor location for mounting. For accurate readings, choose a spot that is representative of the general outdoor conditions, ideally away from direct heat sources (e.g., exhaust vents, direct sunlight on dark surfaces) and obstructions. The shield can be mounted on a wall post or any flat surface.
  4. Mounting Options:
    • Wall/Flat Surface Mount: Use the included screws to attach the mounting bracket to your desired flat surface. Ensure the bracket is oriented correctly with the 'UP' indicator pointing upwards.
    • Pole Mount: Utilize the provided zip ties to secure the mounting bracket to a pole. For enhanced durability and resistance to extreme temperatures, consider using UV-stable, extreme-temperature rated nylon zip ties, which are available at most hardware stores.
  5. Attach Shield to Bracket: Once the mounting bracket is securely installed, slide the sensor protection shield onto the bracket. Ensure it is firmly seated.

Operation

The sensor protection shield operates passively by creating a barrier against direct weather exposure while allowing air to circulate freely around your sensor. This multi-tiered design is crucial for maintaining accurate temperature and humidity readings by preventing solar radiation and precipitation from directly impacting the sensor.

Once installed, the shield requires no active operation. Its primary function is to provide a stable micro-environment for your outdoor sensor, enhancing its longevity and data accuracy.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Periodically inspect the shield for dirt, dust, or debris accumulation, especially within the tiered plates. Clean with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners that could damage the plastic.
  • Inspection: Regularly check the mounting hardware to ensure the shield remains securely attached to its surface. High winds or other environmental factors can loosen mounts over time.
  • Sensor Access: To change sensor batteries or perform maintenance on the sensor itself, simply slide the shield off its mounting bracket. Reattach and secure after servicing.

Troubleshooting

  • Inaccurate Readings: Even with the shield, sensor placement is critical. Ensure the shield is not mounted near heat-emitting appliances, reflective surfaces, or in areas with poor air circulation. Verify the sensor is correctly positioned within the shield and not obstructed.
  • Shield Wobbles After Installation: Confirm that all mounting screws or zip ties are tightened securely. If using zip ties, ensure they are robust enough for outdoor conditions.
  • Sensor Does Not Fit: Verify that your sensor model is listed as compatible with the 925-1418 shield. Refer to the 'Specifications' section for a list of compatible La Crosse Technology sensors.
