1. Introduction
This manual provides instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of the Preamer RTD Pt100 Temperature Sensor. This sensor is designed for precise temperature measurement and control in various industrial and scientific applications.
The RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector) Pt100 sensor utilizes a platinum resistance element (Pt100) to measure temperature. It features a robust design with a stainless steel probe and Teflon-insulated lead wires for reliable performance in challenging environments.
2. Product Overview

Figure 3: This image highlights the sensor's metal probe, threaded connection, and the three-wire configuration with insulated spade terminals for electrical connection.
3. Safety Information
Always observe standard safety precautions when working with electrical components and temperature measurement devices. Ensure power is disconnected before installation or maintenance. Do not exceed the specified temperature or electrical ratings.
4. Setup and Installation
- Mounting: The sensor features a PT1/2" taper thread for secure installation. Ensure the mounting location provides adequate thermal contact for accurate temperature measurement. Use appropriate sealing tape or compound on the threads if a liquid-tight seal is required.
- Wiring: This Pt100 sensor uses a 3-wire configuration (A, B, b) for improved accuracy by compensating for lead wire resistance.
- Connect the two red wires to the positive terminals of your RTD input device (typically labeled A and B).
- Connect the blue wire to the negative terminal (typically labeled b).
- Connection to Controller: Connect the sensor's lead wires to a compatible RTD temperature controller or data acquisition system. Refer to your controller's manual for specific wiring diagrams and configuration settings.
- Insulation: The lead wires are Teflon-insulated and include an electromagnetic shield for noise reduction. Ensure proper grounding of the shield if required by your system.
5. Operating Instructions
Once installed and wired correctly, the Pt100 sensor will provide a resistance output proportional to the measured temperature. Your connected RTD controller will convert this resistance into a temperature reading.
- Temperature Range: Operate the sensor within its specified temperature range: Normal recommended range is -50°C to 200°C (-58°F to 392°F). The maximum operating temperature is -50°C to 250°C (-58°F to 482°F).
- Calibration: While Pt100 sensors are inherently stable, periodic calibration checks against a known reference temperature may be performed to ensure continued accuracy, especially in critical applications.
6. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Keep the probe tip clean from debris or buildup that could affect temperature transfer. Use a soft cloth and appropriate cleaning agents if necessary, ensuring they do not damage the metal probe.
- Inspection: Periodically inspect the sensor for any signs of physical damage, corrosion, or wear on the probe, threads, or lead wires.
- Connection Integrity: Ensure all electrical connections remain tight and free from corrosion.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Inaccurate Temperature Readings | Poor thermal contact; incorrect wiring; sensor damage; controller misconfiguration. | Ensure probe is fully immersed or in good contact with the measured medium. Verify wiring against Section 4. Inspect sensor for damage. Check controller settings for Pt100 type and 3-wire configuration. |
| No Temperature Reading | Open circuit in sensor or wiring; incorrect wiring; controller fault. | Check continuity of lead wires and sensor element. Verify wiring. Test controller with a known good sensor or simulate RTD resistance. |
| Fluctuating Readings | Electrical noise; loose connections; unstable temperature environment. | Ensure proper shielding and grounding. Tighten all connections. Stabilize the measurement environment. |
