Setup

Before first use, it is important to prepare your coffee maker:

  1. Unpack: Remove all packaging materials and promotional labels from your coffee maker.
  2. Clean Components: Wash the thermal carafe, lid, gold tone filter, and cleaning brush in warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
  3. Initial Rinse Cycle: Fill the water tank to the MAX line. Place the empty thermal carafe with its lid on the warming plate. Run a brew cycle without coffee to flush out any manufacturing residue. Discard the water.
  4. Position: Place the coffee maker on a flat, stable surface, away from walls or heat-sensitive materials. Ensure adequate ventilation around the unit.

Operating Instructions

Brewing Coffee with Integrated Grinder

  1. Fill Water Tank: Open the water tank lid and fill with fresh, cold water up to the desired level, indicated by the cup markings.
  2. Add Coffee Beans: Open the bean hopper lid and pour whole coffee beans into the hopper. The hopper has a 1/2 lb capacity.
  3. Select Brew Size: Use the 'CUP / CARAFE' dial to select the desired number of cups (1-12) or a single serving for a mug or travel cup.
  4. Adjust Strength: Use the 'STRENGTH' dial to choose your preferred coffee strength from 1 (mild) to 8 (strongest).
  5. Adjust Grind Size: The machine automatically suggests a grind size based on your strength selection. You can fine-tune this using the grind size adjustment knob on top of the bean hopper. Finer grinds are typically for stronger coffee, coarser for milder.
  6. Hand adjusting the grind size knob on the Breville Grind Control

Programmable Auto-Start

The auto-start feature allows you to set a specific time for your coffee maker to begin brewing automatically:

  1. Prepare Machine: Ensure the water tank is filled, coffee beans are in the hopper (or pre-ground coffee in the filter), and the carafe/mug is in place.
  2. Set Time: Press the 'AUTO START' button. Use the 'CUP / CARAFE' and 'STRENGTH' dials to set the desired start time.
  3. Confirm: Press 'AUTO START' again to confirm the setting. The machine will now start brewing at the programmed time.

Maintenance and Cleaning

Regular cleaning is crucial for maintaining the performance and longevity of your Breville Grind Control Coffee Maker and ensuring the best coffee taste.

Daily Cleaning

  • Filter Basket and Carafe: After each use, remove the gold tone filter and filter basket. Discard used grounds. Wash the filter, filter basket, and thermal carafe (including its lid) with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
  • Drip Tray: Empty and clean the drip tray regularly.
  • Exterior: Wipe down the exterior of the machine with a soft, damp cloth.

Weekly Cleaning (Grinder Area)

The integrated burr grinder area requires regular attention to prevent clogs and ensure consistent grinding:

  1. Remove Bean Hopper: Ensure the bean hopper is empty. Unlock and remove the bean hopper.
  2. Remove Upper Burr: Carefully remove the upper burr from the grinder assembly.
  3. Clean Grinder: Use the provided cleaning brush to thoroughly brush away any accumulated coffee grounds from both the upper and lower burrs, as well as the grinding chute. A bamboo picnic knife or similar tool can help scrape inside the chute.
  4. Reassemble: Once clean, reassemble the burrs and bean hopper, ensuring they are securely locked in place.

Descaling

Mineral deposits from water can build up over time, affecting performance. The machine has a sensor that indicates when descaling is needed. It is recommended to descale every 6 weeks or as prompted by the machine.

  1. Prepare Descaling Solution: Follow the instructions on a commercial descaling solution suitable for coffee makers, or use a mixture of white vinegar and water (e.g., 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water).
  2. Run Descaling Cycle: Pour the solution into the water tank. Place the empty carafe on the warming plate. Initiate the descaling cycle as per your machine's specific instructions (refer to the manual's descaling section if available, or follow on-screen prompts).
  3. Rinse Cycles: After the descaling cycle is complete, run several cycles with fresh, clean water to thoroughly rinse out any remaining descaling solution.
