Strongway 12-Ton Stubby Hydraulic Bottle Jack

Strongway 12-Ton Stubby Hydraulic Bottle Jack

Model: 12-Ton Stubby Hydraulic Bottle Jack

Introduction

The Strongway 12-Ton Stubby Hydraulic Bottle Jack is engineered for vertical lifting applications in various environments, including automotive and agricultural repair shops, loading docks, and industrial settings. Its low-profile design makes it suitable for spaces where standard bottle jacks may not fit. This jack is designed to meet ASME PALD 2009 standards. It is crucial to understand that this jack is intended for vertical lifting only and must not be used for sideways or downward force applications.

Safety Information

WARNING: Read and understand all instructions before using this hydraulic bottle jack. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious injury or property damage.

  • Always wear ANSI-approved safety goggles and heavy-duty work gloves during setup and operation.
  • Ensure the jack is placed on a hard, level surface capable of supporting the load.
  • Never exceed the rated capacity of 12 tons.
  • Do not use the jack for sustained load support. Immediately after lifting, support the load with appropriate jack stands.
  • Keep hands and feet clear of the jack and the load during lifting and lowering operations.
  • Do not modify the jack or use it for purposes other than vertical lifting.
  • Ensure the load is centered on the saddle of the jack to prevent slipping.
  • Inspect the jack for damage or leaks before each use. Do not use if damaged.
  • Keep children and bystanders away from the work area.

Components

Familiarize yourself with the main parts of your Strongway Hydraulic Bottle Jack:

  • Saddle: The top contact point for the load.
  • Ram: The extendable piston that lifts the saddle.
  • Pump Handle Socket: Where the pump handle is inserted.
  • Release Valve: Controls the lowering of the ram.
  • Base: Provides stability for the jack.
  • Pump Handle: Used to operate the hydraulic mechanism.

Setup

Before first use, and periodically thereafter, perform the following steps:

  1. Inspect the Jack: Check for any visible damage, leaks, or loose parts. Do not use if any issues are found.
  2. Bleed the Air: Hydraulic systems can trap air, which affects performance. To bleed air:
    • Turn the release valve counter-clockwise one full turn to open it.
    • Pump the handle 5-6 full strokes without a load.
    • Turn the release valve clockwise until it is firmly closed.
  3. Check Fluid Level: With the ram fully retracted and the jack upright, remove the oil filler plug. The oil level should be just below the filler hole. Add hydraulic jack oil if necessary, then replace the plug.

Operating Instructions

Lifting a Load

  1. Ensure the jack is on a firm, level surface.
  2. Position the jack so the saddle is directly under the lifting point of the load. Ensure the load is centered on the saddle.
  3. Close the release valve by turning it clockwise until it is firmly seated. Do not overtighten.
  4. Insert the pump handle into the pump handle socket.
  5. Pump the handle steadily to raise the load to the desired height.
  6. Once the load is lifted, immediately place appropriate jack stands under the load for support. Never rely solely on the hydraulic jack to support a load.

Lowering a Load

  1. Ensure the area around the load is clear of personnel and obstructions.
  2. If jack stands are in place, slightly raise the load with the jack to remove pressure from the stands, then carefully remove the jack stands.
  3. Slowly turn the release valve counter-clockwise to gradually lower the load. Do not open the valve too quickly, as this can cause the load to drop rapidly.
  4. Once the load is fully lowered, retract the ram completely.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your hydraulic bottle jack.

  • Cleaning: The jack features a lead-free paint finish that is oil, grease, and dirt-resistant for easy cleanup. Wipe down the jack after each use to remove dirt and debris.
  • Lubrication: The piston-ram is treated and polished to resist skiving. Keep the ram clean and lightly lubricated with a thin film of hydraulic oil.
  • Hydraulic Fluid: Check the hydraulic fluid level every three months or as needed. Use only high-quality hydraulic jack oil. Never use brake fluid, alcohol, glycerin, detergent motor oil, or dirty oil, as this can damage the seals and internal components.
  • Storage: Store the jack in a clean, dry place with the ram fully retracted. This helps protect the ram from corrosion and extends seal life.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect all components for wear, damage, or leaks. Replace any worn or damaged parts with genuine Strongway replacement parts.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your hydraulic bottle jack, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Jack will not lift loadRelease valve open; Low hydraulic fluid; Air in system; OverloadClose release valve; Check/add fluid; Bleed air from system; Reduce load (do not exceed 12 tons)
Jack lifts slowly or erraticallyLow hydraulic fluid; Air in system; Worn sealsCheck/add fluid; Bleed air from system; Contact qualified service personnel for seal replacement
Jack will not hold loadRelease valve not fully closed; Internal leak; Worn sealsEnsure release valve is fully closed; Contact qualified service personnel for inspection
Ram retracts slowly or is jammedAir in system; Ram/piston dirty or corroded; Insufficient weight on ramBleed air from system; Clean and lubricate ram; Apply slight downward pressure on ram if needed for full retraction
