Preparation and Application Instructions

Proper preparation is crucial for a durable and high-quality finish. Follow these steps carefully. For a visual guide, refer to the embedded video, noting that the process shown is for brake calipers but the general preparation and painting techniques are similar.

Video: General guide on surface preparation and paint application, demonstrated on brake calipers by a seller. The principles apply to engine painting.

1. Surface Preparation

  1. Remove Wheels (if applicable): For engine components that are accessible with wheels removed, lift the vehicle safely and remove the wheels to gain full access.
  2. Remove Grease and Dirt: Scrape off any loose grease or dirt from the engine surface.
  3. Remove Rust and Flaking Paint: Use a wire wheel, wire brush, or sandpaper to remove any scaling rust or flaking paint. This step is essential for proper adhesion.
  4. Masking: Mask off all areas you wish to protect from the cleaner, rust remover, and paint. This includes spark plugs, wires, hoses, and any other components not intended for coating.
  5. Clean and Degrease (KBS Klean - sold separately): Thoroughly scrub the engine surface with KBS Klean (or a similar industrial strength cleaner/degreaser). Rinse thoroughly with water and allow to dry.
  6. Rust Removal and Etching (RustBlast - sold separately): Apply RustBlast (or a similar rust remover/metal etch) to the engine surface. Keep the surface wet with RustBlast for at least 30 minutes, reapplying as needed. This product effectively dissolves rust and etches the surface, leaving a zinc phosphate coating for excellent paint adhesion. Finally, rinse thoroughly with water and allow the surface to dry completely.

2. Paint Application (Motor Coater)

Motor Coater can be applied with a brush or a spray gun. For metallic colors, spraying is recommended for the best cosmetic finish. Thinning with KBS #1 Thinner (sold separately) may be required for some spray applications.

  1. Apply First Coat: Apply a thin, even coat of Motor Coater. The paint is self-leveling, so brush marks will flow out smoothly.
  2. Drying Time: Allow the first coat to dry until it is tacky but not completely cured (paint should not come off on your finger). This typically takes a couple of hours depending on humidity and temperature. For faster drying, a paint accelerator (sold separately) can be added.
  3. Apply Second Coat (Optional): If a second coat is desired for enhanced coverage or color depth, apply it once the first coat is tacky. If the first coat has fully cured (not sticky), lightly scuff the surface before applying the second coat.
  4. Final Cure: Allow the Motor Coater to dry completely overnight (at least 18 hours) before reassembling any parts or driving the vehicle. For optimal durability, allow 2-3 days for full cure before subjecting to harsh conditions.

Maintenance

Once cured, KBS Motor Coater provides a durable, long-lasting finish. To maintain its appearance, clean the engine with mild automotive cleaners as needed. Avoid harsh abrasives or solvents that could damage the paint.

Troubleshooting

  • Uneven Coat/Missed Spots: If the finish appears uneven or if areas were missed, apply a second coat after the first coat has become tacky. If the first coat is fully cured, lightly scuff the surface before applying the next coat.
  • Poor Adhesion: Ensure all preparation steps, especially cleaning with KBS Klean and etching with RustBlast, are followed meticulously. Any residual grease, dirt, or loose rust can compromise adhesion.
  • Slow Drying: Drying times can vary based on environmental conditions (temperature, humidity). In low humidity or cooler temperatures, consider using a paint accelerator (sold separately) to speed up the drying process.
