2. Important Safety Information
- Electrical Hazard: This unit contains high voltage components. Do not attempt to open the UPS casing, especially when connected to power. Refer all servicing to qualified personnel.
- Direct Connection: Always connect the UPS directly to a wall outlet. Do not use surge protectors, extension cords, or power strips with the UPS input.
- Ventilation: Ensure adequate ventilation around the UPS. Do not block ventilation openings.
- Initial Odor: A new unit may emit a distinct odor, often described as similar to burnt plastic. This is normal and typically dissipates after a few weeks of continuous operation in a well-ventilated area. It is not indicative of a malfunction.
- Battery Replacement: User-performed battery replacement during the warranty period will void the product warranty. Refer to the Maintenance section for details.
3. Package Contents

4. Setup
4.1. Unpacking and Battery Connection
- Carefully remove the UPS from its packaging.
- Locate the yellow battery connector on the rear panel of the UPS. This connector is typically disconnected for safe transport.
- Push the yellow battery connector firmly into its socket until it clicks into place. This activates the UPS battery circuits.
4.2. Connecting to Power
- Connect the UPS to a grounded 230V AC wall outlet using an appropriate IEC-320 C14 input power cable (not included).
- Ensure the connection is direct to the wall outlet. Do not use surge protectors or extension cords.
- Allow the UPS to charge for at least 10 hours before connecting critical equipment to ensure full battery runtime.
4.3. Connecting Equipment
The BX1400UI features six IEC 320 C13 outlets for connecting your devices.
- Battery Backup & Surge Protection Outlets: All six IEC-C13 outlets provide both battery backup and surge protection. Connect your computer, monitor, and other critical electronics to these outlets.
- Data Line Protection: The rear panel includes RJ-11 ports labeled "DSL/Modem/Fax/Phone" for protecting your telephone or DSL line from surges. These ports are not suitable for Ethernet network connections.
- USB Interface: Connect a USB Type B cable (not included) from the UPS to your computer for communication and to enable shutdown software functionality.

5. Operating Instructions
5.1. Powering On/Off
- To Power On: Press and hold the power button on the front panel until you hear a short beep. The UPS will perform a self-test, and the 'On Line' LED will illuminate green.
- To Power Off: Press and hold the power button until the UPS powers down.
5.2. LED Indicators
The front panel features LED indicators to show the UPS status:
- On Line (Green LED): Indicates the UPS is operating on utility power and providing power to connected equipment.
- On Battery (Yellow LED): Indicates the UPS is operating on battery power during a power outage or brownout. A humming noise is normal during battery operation.
- Replace Battery (Red LED): Indicates the battery needs to be replaced.
- Overload (Red LED): Indicates that the connected equipment exceeds the UPS's capacity. Disconnect non-essential equipment immediately.
5.3. Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR)
The UPS automatically corrects minor voltage fluctuations (sags and surges) without switching to battery power, thus preserving battery life. If voltage fluctuations exceed the AVR's correction range, the UPS will switch to battery power.

8. Maintenance
8.1. Battery Replacement
The APC Back-UPS BX1400UI uses two 12V 7.2Ah sealed lead-acid batteries. The recommended replacement battery pack is APC RBC113.
- During Warranty: If the unit is still under its 2-year warranty, battery replacement must be performed by Schneider Electric IT (SEIT) customer service. User-performed battery replacement during the warranty period will automatically void the warranty.
- After Warranty: After the warranty period, batteries can be replaced by the user. However, due to the presence of high voltage components even when disconnected, it is highly recommended that this operation be performed by specialized personnel. If you choose to replace the batteries yourself, exercise extreme caution.
- Procedure Overview (for experienced users only): Disconnect the UPS from all power sources and connected equipment. Disconnect the yellow battery connector. Remove the rear panel screws, then the front panel (which is snap-fitted), and additional screws. Carefully access the battery compartment. Note the orientation and wiring of the existing batteries (taking photos is recommended) to ensure correct installation of the new batteries.
8.2. Circuit Breaker Reset
In case of an overload, the UPS may trip its circuit breaker. To reset, disconnect some equipment from the UPS, then press the circuit breaker button located on the rear panel (refer to Figure 2).
