2. Setup

2.1 Unpacking and Initial Inspection

Carefully unpack all components from the box. Verify that all items listed in the 'What's in the Box' section are present and undamaged. The package should include the EOS 5DS DSLR Body, Battery Pack LP-E6N, Battery Charger LC-E6, Eyecup Eg, Wide Strap EW-EOS5DS, Interface Cable IFC-150U II, Cable Protector, and a Warranty Card.

2.2 Charging the Battery

Insert the LP-E6N Battery Pack into the LC-E6 Battery Charger. Plug the charger into a power outlet. The charging indicator will illuminate. Once charging is complete, the indicator will change color or turn off, depending on the charger model. Ensure the battery is fully charged before first use.

2.3 Inserting the Battery and Memory Card

  1. Open the battery compartment cover on the bottom of the camera.
  2. Insert the charged LP-E6N battery, ensuring the correct orientation, until it locks into place. Close the battery compartment cover.
  3. Open the memory card slot cover on the side of the camera.
  4. Insert a compatible CompactFlash (CF) card or SD/SDHC/SDXC (UHS-I compatible) card into its respective slot. Ensure the card is inserted correctly until it clicks. Close the memory card slot cover.

2.4 Attaching a Lens

Align the red or white index mark on the lens with the corresponding index mark on the camera's lens mount. Rotate the lens clockwise until it clicks into place. To remove the lens, press the lens release button and rotate the lens counter-clockwise.

3.2 Basic Photography Modes

The mode dial on the top-left allows selection of various shooting modes, including Program AE, Shutter Priority AE, Aperture Priority AE, and Manual. Refer to the on-screen guide in the Intelligent Viewfinder II for detailed explanations of each mode.

3.3 Autofocus System

The 61-point High Density Reticular AF system provides fast and accurate focusing. Utilize the EOS iTR (Intelligent Tracking and Recognition) system for enhanced subject tracking, especially with moving subjects. The camera's iSA (Intelligent Scene Analysis) system, with its 150,000-pixel RGB+IR sensor, assists in precise AF and metering.

3.4 Mirror Control and Shutter Release

To minimize camera shake, especially with the high-resolution sensor, the EOS 5DS features an advanced mirror control mechanism. The 'Time Release Lag' setting in the menu allows you to introduce a delay between the mirror flip-up and the shutter release, enabling mirror and shutter vibrations to dissipate for sharper images.

3.5 Continuous Shooting

The camera supports high-speed continuous shooting at up to 5.0 frames per second, powered by dual DIGIC 6 Image Processors. This allows for capturing sequences of action with superb quality.

3.6 Movie Recording

The EOS 5DS can capture Full HD (1080p) movies. Access movie mode via the dedicated switch. You can select between ALL-I (intra-frame) and IPB (inter-frame) compression for different file size and editing flexibility needs. The built-in Time Lapse Movie function allows for creating time-lapse videos directly in-camera.

3.7 Image Cropping

For still photography, the camera offers 1.3x (APS-H equivalent, approx. 30.5 MP) and 1.6x (APS-C equivalent, approx. 19.6 MP) in-camera crop functions. These can be displayed in the viewfinder as a masked or overlaid outline. Additionally, you can select aspect ratios of 1:1, 4:3, and 16:9.

3.8 Intelligent Viewfinder II and LCD Monitor

The Intelligent Viewfinder II provides approximately 100% coverage and displays various shooting settings, including exposure level, white balance, drive mode, and an electronic level. The 3.2-inch ClearView II LCD monitor (1,040,000 dots) offers a bright and sharp display for reviewing images and navigating menus. Use the dedicated Magnify/Reduce button for quick zooming during image review.

The Custom Quick Control screen allows you to personalize the display of frequently used settings, including their location and size, for efficient workflow.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Cleaning the Camera

Regularly clean the camera body with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, use a slightly damp cloth and then dry thoroughly. Avoid using solvents or abrasive cleaners. Keep the lens and sensor free from dust and smudges using appropriate cleaning tools (blower, lens brush, micro-fiber cloth). Never touch the sensor directly.

4.2 Battery Care

Store batteries in a cool, dry place. Avoid fully discharging the battery frequently, as this can reduce its lifespan. If storing the camera for an extended period, remove the battery.

4.3 Storage

When not in use, store the camera in a dry, dust-free environment, preferably in a camera bag or case. Avoid extreme temperatures and high humidity.

5. Troubleshooting

5.1 Image Blur

If images appear blurry, ensure the lens is properly attached and clean. Check your shutter speed; for handheld shots, use a shutter speed of at least 1/focal length (e.g., 1/50s for a 50mm lens). Utilize the camera's 'Time Release Lag' setting to mitigate mirror and shutter vibrations, especially when shooting on a tripod.

5.2 Inconsistent Exposure/Color

Under flickering light sources (e.g., fluorescent lights), the camera's 'Anti-flicker' function can help achieve more consistent exposure and color. Enable this feature in the camera settings if you encounter such issues.

5.3 Slow Data Transfer

Ensure you are using the provided USB 3.0 cable and cable protector for connecting to a computer. Using a USB 2.0 port or cable will result in slower transfer speeds for the large 50.6 MP image files. Verify your computer's USB port supports USB 3.0 for optimal performance.

5.4 Camera Not Powering On

Check if the battery is fully charged and correctly inserted. Ensure the power switch is in the 'ON' position. If the issue persists, try using a different charged battery.
