Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the optimal performance and longevity of your Hayward C150S SwimClear Cartridge Pool Filter. This filter is designed for straightforward setup, often requiring minimal tools for connection to existing pool plumbing.

Pre-Installation Checklist:

  • Ensure the installation site is level, well-drained, and accessible for maintenance.
  • Verify that all necessary plumbing connections (2" x 2 1/2" union connections) are available and compatible.
  • Confirm that the pool pump is compatible with the filter's flow rate requirements.
  • Read all safety warnings and instructions provided on the product labels and in this manual before beginning.

Installation Steps:

  1. Position the Filter: Place the filter unit on a firm, level surface, ensuring adequate clearance for servicing and access to the drain plug.
  2. Connect Plumbing: Attach the pool's return and suction lines to the filter's inlet and outlet ports using the provided 2" x 2 1/2" union connections. Ensure all connections are watertight.
  3. Install Pressure Gauge: Screw the pressure gauge into the designated port on the filter lid.
  4. Secure the Lid: Ensure the Easy-Lok ring is securely latched.
  5. Fill with Water: Before starting the pump, ensure the filter tank is filled with water to prevent airlock and damage to the pump.
  6. Initial Start-up: Open the air relief valve on the top of the filter. Start the pool pump. Once a steady stream of water (no air) is discharged from the air relief valve, close the valve.

Note: If water leakage appears anywhere other than the air relief valve, immediately shut off the pump and inspect all connections. Do not return the filter to service until the leak is resolved.

Operating Instructions

The Hayward C150S SwimClear filter operates by circulating pool water through a cartridge element that traps impurities. Monitoring the pressure gauge is key to understanding when maintenance is required.

Normal Operation:

  • Once the filter is installed and the pump is running, note the initial pressure reading on the gauge. This is your "clean filter" operating pressure.
  • The filter will continuously clean the pool water, and over time, trapped debris will cause the pressure to rise.
  • Maintain proper water chemistry as recommended by pool professionals to ensure efficient filtration and prevent premature filter clogging.

When to Clean the Filter:

The filter cartridge requires cleaning when the pressure gauge reading rises 8-10 PSI above the initial "clean filter" pressure, or when the flow to the pool noticeably decreases. Regular cleaning ensures optimal filtration performance and extends the life of the filter element.

Maintenance

The SwimClear filter's Easy-Lok ring design and comfort grip handles simplify the maintenance process, making cartridge cleaning and replacement quick and efficient.

Cleaning the Filter Cartridge:

  1. Turn Off Pump: Always turn off the pool pump and close all valves to stop water flow to and from the filter before performing any maintenance.
  2. Drain Filter: Open the air relief valve and remove the drain plug at the bottom of the filter to allow water to drain completely.
  3. Remove Lid: Rotate the Easy-Lok ring to the "OPEN" position and lift the filter lid using the comfort grip handles.
  4. Extract Cartridge: Carefully lift the dirty filter cartridge out of the tank.
  5. Clean Cartridge: Rinse the cartridge thoroughly with a garden hose to remove accumulated debris. For stubborn dirt or oils, use a specialized cartridge cleaning solution.
  6. Inspect and Replace: Inspect the cartridge for any damage (tears, cracks). If damaged, replace it with a new Hayward CX150XRE cartridge.
  7. Reassemble: Place the clean or new cartridge back into the filter tank. Ensure the O-ring seal is properly seated and lubricated. Replace the lid and rotate the Easy-Lok ring to the "CLOSE" position until it latches securely.
  8. Restart System: Close the drain plug. Open all valves. Open the air relief valve and restart the pump. Close the air relief valve once a steady stream of water is observed.

Troubleshooting

This section provides solutions to common issues you might encounter with your Hayward C150S SwimClear Cartridge Pool Filter.

Common Issues and Solutions:

  • Low Water Flow / High Pressure:
    • Cause: Clogged filter cartridge.
    • Solution: Clean or replace the filter cartridge as described in the Maintenance section.
  • Water Leaking from Filter:
    • Cause: Improperly seated O-ring, loose connections, or damaged tank/lid.
    • Solution: Turn off the pump, relieve pressure, inspect and lubricate the O-ring, tighten all plumbing connections. If damage is visible, contact a qualified pool technician.
  • Air in Pool Lines:
    • Cause: Air leak in the suction side of the pump or filter system.
    • Solution: Check all connections on the suction side (skimmer, pump basket lid, filter connections) for tightness. Ensure water level in the pool is adequate.
  • Cloudy Pool Water:
    • Cause: Dirty filter, improper water chemistry, or insufficient filtration time.
    • Solution: Clean or replace the filter cartridge. Test and adjust pool chemistry (pH, alkalinity, sanitizer levels). Increase pump run time.
