3. Setup

3.1. Battery Installation

The T51VP3 radios use rechargeable battery packs. To install:

  1. Ensure the radio is turned off.
  2. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the radio.
  3. Slide the cover down and lift to remove.
  4. Insert the rechargeable battery pack into the compartment, ensuring the contacts align correctly.
  5. Replace the battery compartment cover and slide it up until it clicks into place.

3.2. Charging the Batteries

Before first use, fully charge the battery packs. There are two methods for charging:

Using the Desktop Charger:

  1. Connect the Micro USB Charging Cable to the desktop charger.
  2. Plug the USB cable into a compatible USB power source (e.g., wall adapter, computer USB port).
  3. Place the radios into the charging slots on the desktop charger. Ensure the radios are seated properly.
  4. The battery indicator on the radio display will show charging status.

Direct Micro USB Charging:

  1. Locate the Micro USB charging port on the side of the radio (covered by a rubber flap).
  2. Open the rubber flap.
  3. Connect the Micro USB Charging Cable directly to the radio's port.
  4. Plug the USB cable into a compatible USB power source.

Note: The radios can also operate using 3 AAA alkaline batteries (not included) if rechargeable packs are not available or charged.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1. Power On/Off and Volume

  1. To turn the radio ON, rotate the power/volume knob clockwise until you hear a click and the display illuminates.
  2. To turn the radio OFF, rotate the power/volume knob counter-clockwise until you hear a click.
  3. To adjust the VOLUME, rotate the power/volume knob clockwise to increase and counter-clockwise to decrease.

4.2. Channel Selection

To select a communication channel:

  1. Press the MENU button once. The channel number on the display will flash.
  2. Use the UP (▲) or DOWN (▼) buttons to select your desired channel (1-22).
  3. Press the MENU button again to confirm your selection, or wait 5 seconds for the setting to automatically save.

4.3. Transmitting and Receiving (PTT)

To communicate with another radio:

  1. Ensure both radios are on the same channel and privacy code.
  2. Press and hold the PTT (Push-To-Talk) button located on the side of the radio.
  3. Speak clearly into the microphone. The TX icon will appear on the display.
  4. Release the PTT button to listen for a response. The RX icon will appear when receiving a signal.

4.4. Channel Scan

The Channel Scan feature allows you to automatically scan all 22 channels for activity:

  1. Press the MON/SCAN button once. The radio will begin scanning through channels.
  2. When activity is detected on a channel, the scan will pause on that channel.
  3. To transmit on the detected channel, press the PTT button.
  4. To resume scanning, press the MON/SCAN button again.

4.5. NOAA Weather Scan + Alert

Stay informed about weather conditions with the NOAA Weather Scan and Alert features:

  1. Press the WX button. The radio will enter NOAA Weather Scan mode.
  2. The radio will automatically scan through 10 available weather (WX) band channels and lock onto the strongest weather channel.
  3. If a severe weather alert is broadcast, the NOAA Weather Alert will sound an alarm.
  4. To exit Weather Scan mode, press the WX button again.

5. Maintenance

Proper care ensures the longevity and performance of your Midland T51VP3 radios:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, damp cloth to clean the exterior of the radios. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Battery Care: Fully charge batteries before extended storage. If not used for long periods, remove alkaline batteries to prevent leakage.
  • Storage: Store radios in a cool, dry place away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.
  • Water Resistance: The radios are water-resistant, but not waterproof. Avoid submerging them in water. Ensure the USB port cover is securely closed when not charging.

6. Troubleshooting
